So i bought a 9800GTX+ OC, which im very happy with, but I'd like to know what exactly the 9800GTX+ is and the difference between the two? I mean, talk about dumb ass naming policies of Nvidia. On the box my new card, it says BFG 9800GTX+, overclocked. Yet, I'm pretty sure there is another 9800GTX+ which has some differences in the chip? Even though they are named the same thing.

9800GTX+ is run at nvidia's reference stock clock speeds.

Any OC versions, just have a modified BIOS, which is running them at higher clock speeds. Same thing applies for all graphics cards, chip is the same.

The difference is that your 9800GTX+ OC came "factory overclocked". This means that BFG raised the core, shader and memory clock to improve performance. Most people buy the "stock" 9800GTX+ because overclocking is easy and safe as long as your doing it through software. (generally speaking that is) I don't think there's any physical difference, because BFG doesn't change the PCB on their cards. (also generally)
Hope this helps!

Sorry guys i should have been more specific! I was mainly asking about the '+' on the card's name and what it represents? Since I've seen threads around here talking about a 9800GTX+ that isn't out yet but has a different chip type to the 9800GTX+ i have now, which looks just like the regular 9800GTX's. I'm a little confused, and you're probably confused reading this too!

Do you mean what is the difference between the:

9800GTX

and

9800GTX+

?

If so, the 9800GTX+ is to put it simply the mark 2 of the 9800GTX. They are using a smaller fabrication process which allows the chip to run cooler, use less energy and clock higher. And this is what nvidia has done. The reference stock clocks for the 9800GTX+ are higher than that of the first "version" 9800GTX.

In terms of the bit after the main product name. (e.g Turbo, OC, OCX, SSC, etc)
That is done on a MF by MF basis and are just names made up by those MF's to give different names to the same base prodcut but which has varying degrees of factory OCing. Some companies use higher binned (clock higher) chips for their pre-OC'd products, but from my experience, it has always been possible to buy the vanilla (stock clocks) version and flash the BIOS to a pre-overclocked version with no probs.

Hey AlexP, here's a post you made in reply to me in this thread, which is what got me confused.

In your specs you have written OC+.

There is a difference between a:

9800GTX+ OC

and a:

9800GTX OC+

Which do you have?

Now, my card, on the box, is a BFG 9800GTX+ OC, which i intended to go for - so yes, 'mark 2' of the 9800GTX I'm assuming. I knew of the 9800GTX's, but a friend recommended i go for the 9800GTX+, so i did. Additionally, its factory overclocked, so i bought it at a bargain. Anywho, your post kinda confused me, which is actually why I've opened up this thread to question the difference between a ''9800GTX+ OC'' and a ''9800GTX OC+''? lol. So confusing!

well OC+ doesnt exist, was just going by what you were saying.

Product List from BFG's website, with explanation by me :p:

> 9800 GTX OCX 512MB PCIe 2.0 (OverClocked eXtreme "Mark 1")

> 9800 GTX+ OC 512MB PCIe 2.0 (OverClocked "Mark 2")

> 9800 GTX OC 512MB PCIe 2.0 (OverClocked "Mark 1")

> 9800 GTX OC2 512MB PCIe 2.0 (OverClocked 2 "Mark 1")

Hope that clears it up a bit...?

let me know if there is anything else confusing.

No, your good, you have a revision 2 (to put it simply) 9800GTX.
And afaik, they are really good in terms of price/performance.

Good choice.
