Dual Power Supply.

Hi Guys

I am building a 2P Rig with an EVGA SR-2 motherboard but unfortunately i have found that the Power Supply i have has just 1x 8 pin connector for one CPU so no second connector for CPU 2 now i wanted to know if it is possible to run a power supply for the Rig and one second power supply just for CPU 2, is it possible?

I've had to use a single 8-pin to dual 8-pin before like this: https://www.amazon.com/Motherboard-Supply-Y-Splitter-Adapter-Sleeved/dp/B0094PBKN8 and something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matter...coding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=K36B231RKHNZY67AEVEW

Though with that board I don't recall that you'll actually need the second connector populated unless you're doing major overclocking...I could be wrong though. And why not try to do some OC-ing with a board like that!

You have to, both CPUs needs a 8 pin connector or 2 x 4 pin connector, each CPU has an optional 6 pin connector that's the one that it doesn't really need to be populated if not for crazy Overclock.

About ordering connectors from amazon i don't want because i want to Fire up the Rig today.

Gotcha, I guess for some reason I thought it could handle both CPU's with a single EPS. My mistake.

As-far-as being able to get something today, what shops do you have in your area that could craft an adapter cable like that for you?

Otherwise, take a second PSU, use the EPS connector and short the green and a neighboring black wire with a paperclip or wire lead on the main ATX connector to turn it on. You could also run a back probe from the ATX connector hooked up to the mainboard to short it at the same time that you press the power button. Won't be the cleanest solution, but it would work today.

I was already in a few shops but i didn't find anything.

If using 2 Power supplies ( that i am sure that is what i am going to do ) when turning off the Rig one power supply will still deliver power to the second CPU wont that could cause any damage to the CPU?

I've never had an issue with CPU damage from doing this, now if you left the PSU running and decided to take it out of the socket because the system was in an "off" state, that'd be a risk you were taking, I also wouldn't leave the PSU just running. At that point you could remove the power to the second PSU, flip the switch or remove the jumper to turn off the PSU.

If I recall if you run jumpers from the green and ground on the ATX connector to the PSU connected to the mainboard over to the second PSU, you should be able to control both with the power switch on your case effectively negating the need for an external switch and allowing the system to turn off both PSU's as well. I always setup a dedicated switch though so YMMV with this solution, but realistically it takes very little to excite the power on/off switch circuit for PSU's so running a couple of wires (back-probe style) between PSU's should do the trick. If it doesn't, then use a jumper.

Standard PSU's with dual 8pin CPU connectors are a thing and not too pricey. Given what you've said you'll be doing with that rig in the Xeon thread, an 800-850 watt would work.

From what I've seen on various forums (like Tom's Hardware), It is not recommended. Reasons like issues for both PSU voltage regulators for example. If I we're you, I'd check around before committing. In the end, it's your choice.
