Electronic Arts is replacing its Origin software with a new EA app by the end of this year.

When you launch Origin, you get this message:

EA published a press release on the subject:

For over 10 years we’ve welcomed millions of players into our Origin platform, we’ve listened to your feedback and acknowledge the limitations of this platform in a quickly evolving entertainment landscape. So we set out to build EA’s next-generation PC game platform - a faster, more reliable, and more streamlined gaming experience - the best possible place for you to experience EA’s incredible games, services and content.

Today, we’re thrilled to announce that the EA app has officially left its open beta phase and will soon replace Origin as our primary PC platform. The EA app is our fastest and lightest PC client to date. With the new streamlined design you will easily find the games and content you’re looking for and discover your new favorite games. With automatic game downloads and background updates you can ensure that your games are ready to play when you are.

You will also be able to build your ultimate friends list by connecting your EA account to other platforms and services like Steam, Xbox and PlayStation. You’ll be easily recognizable with your custom unique ID. Once you're connected, know what and when your friends are playing so you can jump in and play together.

For our Origin players, we’ve worked hard to make the transition to the EA app as simple as possible. We will be inviting you to make the move soon, and by the time you receive your invite, all your games and content, including games previously installed, will be ready and waiting for you on the EA app. Your local and cloud saves will transfer forward ensuring you can pick up where you left off. Your friends list transfers, too, so you won’t have to worry about remembering all those player IDs.

The EA app is now available for supported Windows PCs. MacOS players - Origin for Mac continues to be the place you can access your games.

We look forward to welcoming you to the EA app!

Even tho they refer to it as EA app, the software is in fact called EA Desktop Client, and the beta can downloaded from the link below:

Am i blind or is the option to show FPS in game removed in the EA App?

I've been using it for quite a while. I do like it better than Origin.

I wish they had named it like "EA Origin Client" that would look better at least. This new name sounds boring as shit. Not that I care really, but eh. I am used to associating my EA games with the Origin client, so making re-think the name just kind of feels weird. I guess they feel they need to re-brand though, so its whatever.

Yeah, I hear you on the name. I don't care for it much either. I do like the layout and look better though.

Origin was a much better name.

Why? What difference will it make?

Haven't made the switch to the new version yet. Gonna rock Origin for as long as possible :rockout:

Well they shit all over the last one so, expected to happen soon. Same book different cover.

Love the link though

They could have used "EA Games" or "EA Play" (which already exists, but used for their subscription model). Never understood why they called it "Origin", from identification aspects it never made any sense.

Just start up Origin and you'll know why. ;) It's totally outdated software wise, very sluggish, esp. compared to other game launchers. They haven't updated it in ages. Aesthetics are also super outdated.

I've noticed that it likes to double up on its folders. Annoying.

C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\EA Desktop\EA Desktop\
D:\Games\Origin Games\The Sims Medieval\The Sims Medieval\

It's trash for me. Slow to load and games like Battlefield 2042 refuse to download. Origin works well currently.

Why? What difference will it make?
None. Even if it works well for you, it just looks different and there's a lot of features missing that Origin has. FPS counter, alert settings etc.

That's still no reason for a name change. EA could just update Origin and call it a day.

Origin is widely associated with utter shite, to be fair. Stuff often does not quite work smoothly, bugs happen and even weird account shenanigans can happen.

Not to mention unexplainedly high CPU usage in the background. Still, an update could fix all this. I don't see a reason to drop a good-sounding name to a boring, generic one.

Yep, noticed that while playing Immortal's Fenyx Rising, I bought it on EPIC but it also opens Origin since its linked there.
I was checking performance one day and noticed that my CPU is at 80+% load, I mean yea that game is fairly CPU heavy cause it runs on the same engine as AC Ody and the likes but still that was more than usual.
Closed down Origin in the background and it went back to the usual/normal % and the difference wasn't small either, after that I kept closing down that thing..

I'm yet to try the new launcher but I will check it out the next time I play something that requires Origin.

I used it for a while but not all my games were available, so I went back to Origin. I guess they've added those to the new app then.

another thing.
are we now forced to re download games instead of searching for already installed ones?
even the workaround with renaming the old file starting the download and then delete it and rename the old file again to let it check the progress does not work anymore.

I'm sure there is a meme to that.

so the new EA website doesn't let you see your game library. I wanted to check to see if I owned Battlefront II, the old origin website used to let me check my library without having to install the origin client.

fucking annoying as piss. I am on my work laptop and don't want to install it right now, just wanted to see if I should pick it up while its on sale cause it would be fun single player for 5 bucks if nothing else.

well fucking done EA, you ain't getting a fucking penny from me now. bunch of twats

This is my issue with it too I probably collected at least 70 games on Origin over the years and many don‘t show.
I love the little addendum at the botton “Don’t see your games? We’re adding more all the time” yeah well tones up now…

Did not see that. What a bunch of pricks, its bad enough we have 20 launchers for all our games these days, its bloody fucking annoying, at least make it easy for us to see our library, ffs.

That's why I buy everything I can on Steam. The few oddball games that aren't there are on GOG. I don't care about the other platforms. I only have Origin because Steam installs it for some EA games that need it.

Huh....looks like EGS, to me.

I rarely open EGS and I think the last time I even logged into Origin was once this past year and it wasn't even my account. My son needed help getting into his account to play his Plants vs Zombie shooting game. Last time I actually played anything from EA, utilizing Origin was that co-op escape from prison game (A Way Out) and that was probably 3 years ago. My brother bought the game and he gave me the pass to play it with him so I didn't even have to pay for it.

If a game requires a launcher to run, I buy the game straight on their platform. Reason: it happens quite often that the account linking is broken and you end up having trouble playing the game.
Another benefit is if servers are down, you can play games on the other platform.
