OFFICIAL Elite: Dangerous

Elite TPU teamspeak? Awesome, I'm in.

As for me, I completely put aside SC in favor of Elite for the moment. I will probably do like RCoon and wait for a full fledged release of Squadron 42.

In the meantime, with my Lasik all healed up, I can't wait to get my DK2 to try Elite out in glorious 1080p, low latency & 6dof. It's already pretty damn awesome with the DK1. :rockout:

I feel like a kid and Christmas is right around the corner. :D

It's pretty awesome with the DK2 - unless they missed it in the beta 1 patch notes you still have to do a little tweaking to get the DK2 working with it right now. Basically have to kill 2 processes in Windows and use the DK2 in extended mode. Head tracking is working great, which is awesome - definitely the best game you can get working on the DK2 at the moment.

Now to wait for the game to finish updating so I can try it out on the new build...

**edit**

Still not being built with the new 0.4.0 SDK for Oculus rift. If you want to play using it you need to kill the wscript.exe process then the OVRservice or OVRservice_64 process. You also need to have set the DK2 to extended mode. Once you've done that you can play Elite with a DK2 and have full head and positional tracking.

Man,

The premium beta was something, but the beta is just mesmerizing.

The new lighting is awesome. Lots of AI ships although they do sometimes seem moronic.

The fuel and jump restrictions add to the difficulty/fun.

Bulletin boards, Bounty offices.

Hailing ships.

My social life is officially over.:)

Anyone participating in the Beta thinks this game will ship by the end of the year? Also, is there a variety of ships in yet?

Yeah, it's pretty darn good when it's working. Also, I seem to be able to make much more money with trading now than in the Premium Beta.

I am so excited for this, As soon as my card is returned I'll be all over this like [REMOVED]

I am going to hell.. I am a bad bad man :(

So does empty space slow you down or no?

So I got it working with the Oculus DK2... Extremely mind blowing.

Did a 2 hour session late last night. It was very comfortable. Resolution could be a better, but it is still very playable. I may not be able to discern the details of a ship in the distance, but I am able to ascertain its heading and speed.

It simply lives up to my wildest childhood dreams in terms of video games.

Helloooo!

So, with the Beta 1 coming up on the 29th, who here on TPU is going to be playing?

I'm interested in teaming up with some of you if possible, I'd like to try some group play since I've been solo'ing since the alpha.

So, lemme know or just chat here about the game if you like. :)

I'm playing the beta if you ever want to team up!

IF anyone else is playing Elite: Dangerous and would like to team up I'm in. Would like to creat a team of traders and be able to communicate over team speak.

I'm in if you can endure a french canadian accent!

Cheers! :toast:

So I now have a Working GPU and a new X52 :O

In-game. Oculus Enhanced. Wife Asleep. Anybody ready?

I'm jealous! How long you gonna be on for?

I was on for 2 sweet hours of bliss. Yet it was not the most lucrative session ever witnessed...

I am wondering about a new setting: "Oculus Image Quality". I have every other setting is maxed out but when this setting is maxed out, it gets really choppy. And when I bring it down by 25%, then everything is buttery smooth but, for the life of me, I can not see a difference in image quality. This setting is supposed to control the "Pixels per Display Pixel" passed to the SDK when calculating the recommended texture size... whatever that means.

Still, its annoying to have a 780Ti Superclocked, overclocked on top of that and having lag on max setting in the Oculus.

I guess I should check out the memory impact this setting has on the GPU maxed out and at 75%...

Ah well... first world problems. :)

Edit: I very well might recidive tonight. I think my girl is coming down with the flu... aw dang it.

Subbing and bringing to the top. I've had my interest piqued in this and SC. Seems erocker and a few others have got their hands on both. :P Gameplay videos aren't good for much except showing off visuals IMO, what do you guys think of this game?

I do have a few questions for the sake of comparison. What are you guys running for settings on your machines to keep 60-75 fps? What do you think of flying with a keyboard? For those of you that also own SC, how do you think trading, combat, and customization compare?

I'll be buying one or the other ASAP, but I'm a student with about $5 to my name. :P

Bubbleawesome, if you're on a budget, and like space sims, seriously check out Evochron Mercenary...it can be had for much cheaper than either SC or ED. Its flight model I still feel is better, but only by a smidge over ED compared to 6 months ago.

I own both SC as an original backer, and purchased ED beta this summer. Both are fun, I feel SC is more action-oriented with the Arena Commander module...it is fun, but loses my interest faster, and the flight feeling isn't quite as good (to me) as either EvoMerc or ED. Out of all 3, I play Elite the most, but EvoMerc was my #1 up until recently. EvoMerc is an indie title that's been out for years, and Vice, the guy that created it is brilliant imho. For a guy on a budget, that is the title to get imho. Wait for SC and ED to mature more... though theoretically, Elite should be officially released before the year is expired, it also has the most stuff and is in an actual beta versus SC and it's limited modules in more of an alpha/tech demo feeling.

My laptop (Dell 3540) and main rig (see sys specs) both run EvoMerc and Elite Dangerous at 1920x1080 with maxed out details and settings with SMAA, nice and smooth. The laptop does stutter every once in a while, and this does not count the bugs from beta itself, but overall the performance is smooth and very fun. Star Citizen on the other-hand runs great on my main rig maxxed out at 1080, but my laptop struggles to pull off 1600x900 with medium settings.

Elite is better with control adjustments at this point, SC's controls are good at default...but changing them has led me to issues mostly when remapping keys on my joystick. EvoMerc has you create your own control style which takes a few tries but is ultimately worth it. EvoMerc also has the steepest learning curve, but has a great online community, seamless online/offline and seamless open space and planetary landings...albeit there is much less detail graphically and for things to scan/see/mine/visit.

I feel Elite is better with its ship controls at this point, but SC's most recent 0.9.2 patch "feels" like they really stepped it up to me...I use both Keyboard + Mouse (laptop) and Logitech Extreme 3D Pro joystick (gaming rig)...and both methods are EXCELLENT in all 3 titles.

SC doesn't have trading yet...that I have seen.. ED and EvoMerc does. ED and EvoMerc are both more open, go do your own thing, be what you want to be, trade, pirate, smuggle, spy, etc. EvoMerc has a more lifeless space than SC or ED, even when in MP...but it's a great and very solid experience that for a budget (and can be had on a steam sale for even cheaper) should be in every Space Sim Combat lover's collection...it is HARD to fly in and become confident in combat...I'm still not great at it after years of on-and-off playing. I always go back to it, and in-fact it'll play on about any hardware within the last 8 years with smooth frames and fast load times. It is limited in other aspects...but what you can do is not one of them..you can modify your ship, shape it, run a crew...choose many different routes, explore, etc. But as SC and ED continue to improve... EvoMerc may become a more distant shadow and will be remembered as that indie space sim with a vertical learning curve! Lol.

If I had to choose right now between SC and ED I would choose, Elite all the way. Both are fun, don't get me wrong. If you want to just get in and gun, on the same couple of maps...over and over and over and over... SC is the way to go at the moment. If you want to explore up to 2000 systems in a beta...ED is the way to go. SC has more ships to buy that look way cooler, ED's ships are more function over form...and there's less of them. ED has an economy running atm, SC does not last I checked...there is the Hangar module and Arena Commander (dogfighting) module.

It ultimately depends on what you want... a good, matured, challenging space sim? EvoMerc all the way. If you master this one... SC and ED will be a cakewalk.

All three of them are in the Space Sim genre, but that's where the similarities start to differ...each has a unique flavor and I'm proud to say all three of them I own and enjoy. If I had to choose just one...EvoMerc...if I had to choose between ED and SC, ED. That's this month, this week, the next things could change quickly as SC and ED come into fruition with each update and trial run. Your system should do quite well running all 3, but don't be surprised at performance issues with SC from time-to-time...it has a long initial load time that is MUCH better than it used to be. Bah. I'll stop now... they're all good...but what you want needs to be what you think about next...if you want more sim, more arcade (there are other good options if a more arcade feel is your thing...), more realistic, more assited, more promised in the future, more modern rendering and technologies, more opportunities and expansion, etc, etc, etc.

Food for thought, and good luck! That is one challenging choice! :toast:

Your system should do quite well running all 3
I did forget to update my sig, but it's fairly close anyway. I do rather miss the 770 but it's good to know it should work well. I am at 1280x1024, so sub 1080p.
That has been the major draw to ED and push from SC. Watching gameplay of ED makes the trading aspect look massive. I've always like games about trading. I remember there was a flash game I played when I was younger on a PIII and geforce 6600. It was called space 2.0 I think and had trading to make a profit. No flying, no combat, just trading. Like stocks. Maybe I'm weird. :p
it is fun, but loses my interest faster
Like above, that has been one of the major issues I've had with SC. With all the promises they are making I don't see a release before 2016, and some people speculate 2018. I'd rather have a finished game that is slightly less graphically beautiful than all the shiny of an unfinished game.
EvoMerc also has the steepest learning curve, but has a great online community, seamless online/offline and seamless open space and planetary landings...albeit there is much less detail graphically and for things to scan/see/mine/visit.
I checked it out. Looks neat. If the steam holiday sale drops it below the $30 it is right now I'll look at it more seriously. For now that is the same price as preordering SC or $5 less than getting into beta now. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Thanks for the massive post. (and adding a third game to consider. :p) To be fair I am probably getting ahead of myself. I don't see myself getting it before christmas anyway. I tend to get too excited for these things. :p

Cheers all!

EvoMerc also has a demo you can check out, it is the full game on a 120 minute time-limit last I checked. Look at Youtube as well. So even if you don't go with it, check out the demo at least...one of the few games to show what it has to offer before you buy it. Enjoy what you end up going with!

So I will have my PC built maybe in 2 weeks. Does it still cost to join this beta?
