You gotta think of it in different terms... when Nike first started up they were giving their shoes away just to get the product out, known, and build a fan base... this seems like a similar plan imo... the tech world is hard to stand out in so they have the funds for it so why not

i think a ton of money is just a drop in the pond to them:toast:

Yeah again, the cloud is a clever idea. We are moving away from privacy concerns to "my whole life was lost" concerns. People at this point in time are switching their lives to technology. If their hard drive crashes, so does part of their life. Imagine in 10 years. You have family photos, videos, medical records, everything electronic. Now imagine we had no cloud, and a hard drive fails. You are fucked, your life is a mess. With the cloud, even if 1 drive goes down, 100 more back up your stuff. There is no way for you to lose info. The cloud is the future, privacy is not. Expect eye scanners or something similar for access to the cloud so people cannot hack your data.

First of all, that's what happens if you don't back up your data like anyone with a shred of common sense should do. Secondly, those servers that you think are so secure... even credit card companies get their stuff hacked, what makes you think these are so invincible?

because the eye scanners are coming soon!

You ever see the mythbusters episode where they had the finger scanner door lock? They were actually able to fool it with a scanned and printed finger print. I'm not against the idea of cloud computing, I just won't have all my files there.

it has it's purpose and i only trust myself with important things... and my private files are on hdd's not connected to a computer until i need them so there is absolutely no way of it being hacked

Well to me that seems like a ton of money spent beta testing the OS. Why not just put a RC out like M$ did for Win7?

The reason google is not doing like microsoft did is because microsoft was trying to market and test only an os, google on the other hand is trying to market a laptop that will support their os. They need people to test and provide feedback for their laptop as well as their os, so for them its a win win. they hope that people will talk to other people about it being really good so they can sell many more when they launch with retail versions of the laptop somtime next year.

Again, if you don't want to use it, then don't. Chrome OS allows for the local storage of data if you want, so stop with the trolling about one feature of an entire OS that you don't even have to use if you don't want to.

And if you are so worried about your data being insecure on the cloud, then you better damn sure not put that data on a portable device. Because it is more likely to be outright stolen or lost with your data on it than it is to be hacked and stolen from secure encrypted data centers.

Subbed and applied. Many questions...x86 or ARM? Ethernet available? Will google pay for cellular service? 3.8 pounds and no hard drive? How much different from android?

Wow, trolling about one feature huh?? More like a discussion about losing data and privacy concerns... and about outright theft, I can controll that situation much better than trusting a third party for security. I'm pointing out that data stored online, whether it be credit card into, social security numbers, or family pictures they are all succeptible. And yes, even local machines can be hacked too if there's enough motivation. But to get pissy because someone brings up their concerns, LBC bud.

I think I applied:confused: When I clicked submit it jumped back to the beginning screen, is that correct?

no, it gives you a conformation saying it has been submitted and if they have a notebook for you, they will contact you

application fail

EDIT: second time around worked, sweet.:D

Regarding everyone hating on me with the security issues:

Yes, I understand there are flaws, but these can be filled with new technology. Anything is open to being hacked. Even AES256bit encryption can be broken! In fact anything made by humans can be broken. I am pointing out that the future is cloud, I don't offer solutions for security. I did offer eye scanners, but I predict some biological option to be honest.

Anyway, cloud computing is the future. I don't like the idea of my data on other servers, but it is the future. We will never lose any data that way. And let's face it, name one digital media that will last more than 20 years. Hard drives won't (ok my 5150 HD is alive but...), CD's won't, SSD's won't, NOTHING WILL! That is why we need the cloud. You would have to be dumb not to see this.

Look, this is all true. So far all our storable media has a definate lifespan. I'm not even saying the cloud idea is that bad, but so far all the reasons for adopting it aren't overwhelming either. Their cloud/mainframe/cluster (whatever spin word you want to use) should have more horsepower than I could ever afford but I'm sure they are storing data on the same media we are and not some unicorn blood powered, never failing device. Althrough I'm sure they have more redundancy.

Chrome OS is looking interesting, but so many hurdles to overcome - though if anyone can, it's Google. Definitely mobile (cell network) data charges need to be made reasonable since much more than just web pages will be coming through. And reception TBH. Real world issues, aside from ethical/privacy arguments.

And the companies running the clouds have to prove themselves reliable, MS had the highest profile fail so far - though most data was eventually manually recovered from their wrecked database.

This is about the PC going completely, instead replaced by some everyone-has-the-same-black-box device.

lol:laugh:, I was disappointed when i read that.

But luckily!:

For the most part though, the changes didn't take much getting used to. There's an option to change the search key back to a Caps Lock

Guys, I've just been informed that applying as a developer greatly increases your chances of getting one. I'm not encouraging application fraud; just something to be aware of.

Think I'll pass on this one. If I'd actually get one I'd have to use it, and that's just wrong!
