Enter to try out a CR-48 Chrome OS notebook

Clouds a cool idea for a notebook or something like that. But for my desktop, I'll pass, internal hard drives are dirt cheap these days, so cheap that I have 2x 400gb hdd's just laying on my floor, sometimes I catch my son tossing them around, but with 3tb sitting in my comp right now, I just don't even care. I have my OS/game drive, and my storage drive, I clear my OS when I please, lose nothing, and have a new OS back up within an hour.

Yes, but with the cloud if you have a fire or flood or tornado or whatever you data is still safe and can be instantly accessed.

Of course cloud offers that kind of support. But I'd rather have my desktop internal HDDs storing my data. Natural disasters here are a very low occurance. I wouldn't mind cloud for my portable device storage, documents and simple things, but using my PC as a Media server for my PS3 and many other things, I don't feel at risk for my house burning down, and I won't live the rest of my life storing info on cloud shaking in the corner worrying about it. Because if I lose my house in a fire, my first thought won't be "at least I have my PC's configuration saved on cloud! Yes!". I'll just get what I had again, along with reconfiguring my burnt down house.

Anyone happen to get one yet? I've heard if you don't have one by now you're probably not getting one.

did it just show up at your door?

Yeah got the package today, though we have had snow so it might have meant to be delivered a bit earlier.

did they tell you that you were getting one or did it just show up?

Just showed up, didn't even know it was from google until I opened it. I thought I was going to get an email saying that I had been selected, but I guess not

First of all, that's what happens if you don't back up your data like anyone with a shred of common sense should do. Secondly, those servers that you think are so secure... even credit card companies get their stuff hacked, what makes you think these are so invincible?

I agree with this completely. I do and dont like the idea of cloud computing just for this reason. Ill stick to using hard drives and other writable media to backup my stuff. Its more secure that way then sending it out to some server.

Not to mention what are you to do if their servers go down whether it be maintenance or a power outage or god knows what else? You cant access your data. It would have to be up 24/7 and I just dont see that as something id want to deal with.

my application is in! fingers crossed :toast:

Care to share details on your registration? Did you apply as a developer or something else?

I applied as an individual. In the "what would make you a unique pilot user" I explained that I am an engineering student at Lehigh University and that I would use the laptop for classes and projects. Otherwise, I just answered the bubble questions and pull-down questions honestly.

Also, today is the application entry deadline.

JUST missed a package from DHL today (p.m.)

THe bottom one can very well be mine >.< !

i wish they used tegra instead of intel pineview for grfx. then maybe it could handle HD better. apparently their are problems with chopping.
