i need to transfer 30 gb from my desktop to my laptop but i don’t have an external hard drive is there an other way to transfer that to the laptop.

If you have the two computers in a LAN, you can create a shared folder on your desktop, move the files there and then access them with the laptop.

can i get like a usb cord and hook up both computer to eachother?

Yes, but last time I checked that will only work with Windows Vista and 7, although I haven't tested it with Win7.
You can also use your network cards and a crossover cable to connect both PCs, if you don't have Vista/7, and use the shared folder system.
The other idea I'm getting is to use ad-hoc, but if you don't have wireless on both PCs, then it's not worth it. Use the above mentioned.

usb cable should be fine

usb cable should be fine

Yes, but not with a regular USB cable.

It's has to be one of these, for example:

See this, please.

EDIT: Made a little search to revive some knowledge and found out that using the above cable you can also transfer files from Windows XP.

USB To USB Like Posted Above, Or Shared Folders, Or Burn It To DVD.

buy a metre of CAT5 wire, RJ-45 jacks and plug em together. that would be real fast.

crimping tool to put wire in jacks : $2.5 max.

that usb costs $99

Well the purpose of this thread was specific to moving 30 gigs...

ya, i know, for this case its best to burn some dvd's. time consuming, but hey, its getting backed up at the same time.
