Fall Creator's Update brings siginificant performance improvement in game mode

The fall update has been a disaster for me. Haven't been able to get a stable install yet. Annoying as hell.

While Joker's video sounds promising, I can't help but feel skeptical and cautious. I tried the optional version of the CU months ago and suffered the dreaded disappearing font problem. None of the so called fixes for it solved the problem, and with most fonts missing, it wasn't easy or even possible to try some of them. The last one I tried involved a reg edit, which left me having to reinstall W10.

So excuse me if I'm overly skeptical MS, but it's your fault for not having tested the beta well enough in the first place. Anything that can sabotage most of your fonts has no business even being called a beta, or being released to the public. It makes me wonder if I should wait until CU is a finalized, auto install, because every time I hear the words Creators Update and "optional", it makes me cringe.

Not surprising after what I experienced with an earlier version.
If true, I would not doubt it's the same FPS the standard creators update mysteriously "lost."
Yeah and anyone making comparison videos really ought to be comparing between no CU and Fall CU, instead of older versions of CU to Fall CU. Otherwise it's pretty deceiving. Also, Joker only tested on an AMD GPU, which are known to have hit and miss results depending who developed the game.

Can't help but wonder if your system is too old for it. Core i7-2### is archaic.

Seems to me any system hardware that is tested for and qualifies as compatible with W10, ought to also run CU. Does MS really deserve this kind of defense?

Clover Trail needed an update from Intel to work. I don't know if Intel ever gave it an update.

Microsoft can only account for variables they're notified of.

For what exactly could it be "too old" ?

LOL

Sandy Bridge CPU's are still Kick A$$. I regretted upgrading from my 2500 K to my 4690 K. I don't like making upgrades when theres a 5% or 10% increase. Id bet a dollar that if I still had my 2500 it would run just fine , seeing as how I ran a Pentium dual core without hyperthreading for several months with no issues, unless ofc some tech not supported by the older cpu is required, in which case, it matters.

You are confusing an utility for identifying the cpu with an actual windows 10 requirement.
FYI I have windows 10 working fine on my q6600 machine which is around 10 years old at this point.

Sandy Bridge isn't listed...
"Last Reviewed: 12-Oct-2017"

Uh huh...
"If you do not see the codename in the table below, then the processor does not support the Windows® 10 driver."

I am pretty sure that has to do with formal support rather than outright incompatibly. That being said Win 10 clearly runs without a hitch on a plethora of CPUs that really are archaic compared to Sandy Bridge , such as the Core 2 lineup.

The original Windows 10? Sure. Anniversary update? Maybe. Creator's update? Not likely.

It says driver.

Just explaining the result. All I'm trying to do. I have a 6700K. Zero problems.

Windows. As. A. Service.

Don't shoot the messenger.

Maybe you know something we don't ? Do these updates use some sort of functionality older CPU's don't have ? I am running FCU on supposedly archaic CPU as well , it seems to work just fine.

I don't know. All I know is that Intel is not releasing a driver for Windows 10 Fall Creators update. Expect problems and no solutions.

For systems that aren't supported, stick to Creators Update.

And keep in mind that these "feature updates" are the equivalent of Windows Vista -> Windows 7 -> Windows 8 previously. There's hardware for Windows Vista that doesn't work on Windows 8.

Think how Mac OS X has little in the way of backwards compatibility...

But Apple has 100% control over the hardware they sell. They can simply blacklist hardware without it being actually incompatible , as a matter of fact they used to do that and you could just modify the installation disc and it would work. So not quite the same thing since I doubt MS has any desire to do that. After all they explicitly said FCU has no extra requirements compared to previous WIn 10 versions.

Sandy Bridge is 12 years old. Is it not time to put it out to pasture?

I found a problem with Fall Creators Update. Symptom was I couldn't access intranet sites by IP. I did some searching on the internet and finally decided to check ipconfig. It showed a vEthernet that made zero sense so I popped open Network Connections and...there it is:

I disabled it and the problem is solved. Kind of annoyed though...

Edit: Nope on restart, came back. Ended up uninstalling the Hyper-V Windows Feature, gone for good now.

You are all wet here. Q6600 runs fine. See my post #42: http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/t...reator-update-experience-so-far.237959/page-2

Consider yourself lucky then.

I got it running awesome.....then I found out I installed in Legacy mode instead of uefi mode. I cant win.

SO I said screw it. Already lost a day might as well try again. Used a fresh USB/ISO and installed again. Same issues as before but way more stable after the updates. It all seems to be good now with the exception of "Edge". I cant click any links or search anything. It will freeze. I suspect the culprit all along has been Edge so Ill just run regular IE until they get it patched up.

Error seems pretty common.

Sandy Bridge is 12 years old. Is it not time to put it out to pasture?

They began work on sandy bridge in 2005 but it wasn't even showcased until 2009 and then officially released in 2011+ In desktop. Unless im mistaken. i waited in line @ microcenter, & although i had to research the part about 2005 & intel R&D'ing SB, i was physically in line @ Microcenter when it Was launched, i recally that part Vividly :) (*edit* unless ofc SB was in place in a Commercial capacity that i am unaware of, which might be possible)

SB is long in the tooth, thats not even a question, but although i have personally retired my SB chips(still got a 3450 i5 tho ;) ) , i disagree that the Chip is "Archaic".....I felt like the switch to Devils canyon was a side step almost....atleast in som,e ways.

regarding the FCU....I have pointed out the following to M$ on more than a few occasions, each time another update comes out, i am a little more amazed that they seem to be Willfully NOT fixing this typo....its admittedly not a big deal, but a company like M$, you'd think they'd wanna dot their T's and Cross their i's....Unless their too busy swimming in the Montains
.:kookoo: oh well, You can bring a horse to water, But if you taught him to fish, he could eat for the rest of his life. :shadedshu:

Because it's not their error, whoever wrote driver/software for your speakers is at fault you should be notifying them. I can provide screenshots of that tab for 3 different headphones and 2 different speakers and only two of those resemble yours and neither have that typo. I'd really like to see who's listed as the provider hidden behind that drop down.

Update: Everything is smooth as butter! Ran the windows store diagnostics tool along with scf scan and she runs like a charm.

@FordGT90Concept 2600k is only 6 years old and yeah that's a long time in the tech world but, not so much in games anymore. Just updated to a 1080 and I'm getting about 10 FPS difference than people with 7700k's.

HW Unboxed posted yet another video showing no gains at all. Either Joker was just deliberately spamming us with fake news, or his system was messed up before the update. Whatever shreds of credibility his channel had left, they're gone now.

Because it's not their error,

its realtek

I cant find proof that driver makers do or dont have input or a hand in designing these interfaces/windows & options. I dont argue that they created the functionality, or the options available, but i wasnt able to confirm the suspicion that they are responsible for the window, and its drop downs. I do admit it seems likely though.

however, the dedicated, realtek window LACKS this typo, which is why i found it odd, and assumed it was M$

either way its not that serious, i was mostly making fun...

I'm using Microsoft's generic HD Audio driver for my Realtek and I have it set to 5.1 out so virtual surround isn't even an option. My Micca Origen+ (stereo DAC/amp) doesn't have an Enhancements tab at all.

I don't have an NVIDIA card but I do wonder if that has something to do with it. Game Mode could easily be derived from technology designed for Xbox One X that generally only works on GCN which they share.
