The example below shows a Microsoft that doesn't give a damn and a clueless user who has no idea about backups. Saying he's lost all his data due to Microsoft's sneaky W10 upgrade might impress and shock someone who doesn't know anything about computers, but not me.

Microsoft might be setting itself up for compensation claims.

Each time his computer prompted him to upgrade, he declined. However, in June 2016 he says the upgrade took place automatically, without his permission. Since the upgrade, Jack’s computer began crashing every 15 minutes. He says he contacted Microsoft and was passed through various different teams to try and fix the problem. But the problems got worse. Eventually, his computer didn’t work at all.

Jack says, "As it stands I’ve lost everything - photos, videos, Word documents, my apps and all my music. Not to mention software I’ve had to pay for." He says Microsoft advised him to take his computer to an electronics team, which is what he did. The result? To get his computer up and running he has been quoted £275.

Unfortunately there are a lot, (the majority) of users that just expect their computers to work, and if updates break something, it's really not their fault.
Forced updates should make the company liable for any loss, regardless of best practice by professionals who know better.

Pays to back-up yo chit, bro!
That it do. Fact is he was 100% going to lose his data anyway without any backups. Microsoft just happened to oblige in this instance, lol.

Well, like you, always, say, qubit... back-up... back-up... back-up.

Which, saved my chit, plenty off times, in 40 odd years.

Dorset where else eh? >>> Thats ENGLAND<<<
Reminds me of that other Story where win 10 was also installed without consent and that person had similer Problems
that person took Microsoft to court and microsoft settled out of court to avoid setting a precedent
there were calls then for some sort of Class Action Lawsuit ( US )

"Which? has received hundreds of complaints about the Windows 10 update and is calling on Microsoft to honour consumers’ rights, including paying compensation where it’s due."
Unfortunately there is no way in Britain or the EU to Bring such a Class Action law Suit

if he pulled the drive and stuck in another pc or use a usb to sata adapter on a laptop or another pc (friends maybe) he could probably copy the stuff off. just because the os is shot doesnt mean his data insnt sitting there

I feel for the guy losing his photos and important documents. It's astounding in this day when you expect everyone should know to backup those things which are not replaceable that people are still not making backups. I probably go overboard with backups but the photos and documents that I want to make sure I don't lose get put on my laptop and desktop at home plus on a WD passport external drive and on my work computer and on a DVD that I keep in my safe deposit box. It would take my house, the building I work in and my bank to all burn to the ground at the same time to permanently lose those files. I seriously doubt that would happen though.
