at the moment it counts for each of them, which means threads with more tags give out a higher sum of points.

Neither of the two threads you listed is tagged, btw

If you don't make the list, your own score will be displayed at the end of the list as additional entry, so you know where you stand

I was questioning how i was on the list @ all.

The badges should link to the relevant stats list

Ive been having a little think about all this and im starting to think its not such a great idea.

1. i have the feeling that members will feel less inclined to contribute if they feel their input isnt positively scored.

2. People will be valued/judged by the amount of time they spend on the site.........i.e. the first to provide a "standard" correct answer scores most

3 Ultimately i can see a filter being applied whereby only + contributions will be visible which really takes away the forum/discussion element.

4 TPU will evolve into a dropdown menu where you can select your problem.

5. The lists are a gateway to unsolicited PM from new members requesting help...........ive had a couple and i always help but i am sure true experts might soon be pissed off especially when you never hear from them again.

6 There will be little or no need for Mods unless a post is reported

I just tagged 5 more recent threads and you are no longer listed. It looks like the rankings will get much more accurate once more and more threads get tagged

While I give "thanks" that thought is being put into improving this forum, I don't really "like" this change for a number of reasons which @CAPSLOCKSTUCK has already enumerated.

I think that the tl;dr of it is that TPU is a discussion forum - it's not Stack Overflow. Discussion forums are by their nature a lot more freeform and often a lot more subjective than extremely focused sites like SO. In a discussion forum, there's a lot more back-and-forth between people, more like an actual face-to-face conversation between two people, than what you get on SO.

That also ties in to awarding "badges" or whatever we call them based on thanks/likes/ratings. It raises the possibility that someone who almost exclusively contributes highly-rated posts that are amusing, but not technical, in the e.g. motherboard section, ends up rated as a "Motherboard Master" or whatever it is.

Finally there's the News section, which is the part of the site that I almost only ever visit. How does one rate and/or quantify posts there, especially since that section generally ends up being a circlejerk where anti-Intel/anti-NVIDIA posts are upvoted to high heaven while more moderate posts, often based on factual analysis, are ignored? If the simple solution is to exclude News threads fom badge calculation, then that doesn't seem fair, because I'm pretty sure I know more about hardware than many of the posters there... some of whom have various "Master" badges.

And the rate vs like thing is pissing me off. WHICH ONE DO I USE???

if you use rate, it will automatically produce a like. if you use like only, they will be synchronized only when i run some manual task.

=> use rate

like will probably be removed at some point in the near future once i've got more feedback on ui/mechanics for rate

This is why i suggested this:

A small suggestion: just because someone has within the top of good contributions in a particular section doesn't necessarily mean he / she is very knowledgeable of the subject. As such, add a condition like ... say ... @ least +100 to be eligeable (meaning, @ the time i'm writing this, only the gaming and graphics categories would have "experts", "champions" and such). As time goes on, this +100 figure may need revision: after all, this system is barely 1 day old.

Right now, you have cases such as this:

Screenshot from 2018-03-23 13-54-49.png

Notice how 3 users have the "expert" tag, when they only have +1. This part here really needs some tinkering, IMO.

As it stands now, this system is in it's infancy to lets give a few more days: IMO, 2 weeks should be enough time to make a final decision over this, one way or the other.

@W1zzard :

please change the rating colors to a more pastel version. Example

rating-new-colors.png

-1: #bf3939
+1: #56d856
+2: #49b749
+3: #3c963c

The current colors are very distracting and simply don't fit into the color scheme of the forum.

Thanks!

these do look nice. do you have appropriate border colors for me too?

this will solve itself with more threads being tagged

the badges are sorted in terms of ranking. champion > master > expert. why would you want to hide a badge?

Here is a tweaked version with borders included:

-1: #bf2f2f border: 2px solid #8c2323
+1: #41d841 border: 2px solid #39bf39
+2: #37b737 border: 2px solid #2f9e2f
+3: #2d962d border: 2px solid #257c25

rating-new-colors-v2.png

Notice that the border was changed to 2px for better border visibility. The red one is pretty tricky, but I think it's visible enough.

It's quite simple :
I see myself as CPU/GPU kind of guy and (if I could choose), I would want to show CPU "expert" and GPU "expert" over "Champion" of Memory or Cases any time :)

Colors changed, I decided to stick with 1 px border and a slightly less prominent border color

fair point. remind me in a few weeks once we have more data. i suspect this should settle itself quickly with more tagged threads and you naturally being more active in those fields which you like more

i tagged all threads from this year in forums "overclocking & cooling", "motherboards & memory", "system builders advice" and the results do look promising

May I ask, what is your ultimate goal for these tags? Who is the intended audience?

I feel these tags are... amusing... but not very helpful. I see I am no longer a Monitor expert but I'm suddenly a Notebook champion? If someone comes to me seeking notebook advice, most likely I will try to talk them into buying/building a PC - a computer that uses a cavernous case that promotes good cooling, not restrict it. A computer that can be upgraded and evolve over time to stay current. A computer that requires the use of a real full size keyboard and mouse, easily supports 2 or more big, and at eye level, monitors. And surround sound speakers.

Notebooks are proprietary  cash cows for notebook makers. They are designed to take advantage of consumers - forcing them to buy all new every time. I do know how to repair notebooks, but I am not a champion of notebooks!

why would you want to hide a badge?
Because, for example, I don't like notebooks. I think they should be used only for their initial design purpose - for students to lug to class and road warriors to give Power Point presentations and answer emails while on business trips. There is no such thing as a good "gaming notebook" for example. And no notebook is a desktop replacement, either. Those are false and misleading marketing scams.

I do like the "Long Service" tag. It makes me feel the site appreciates my contributions. The other tags are labels. And not sure I like to be labeled. I really don't know many people who do like to be labeled - unless they are allowed to choose their own.

I guess if I had a choice, I would want the option in my profile page to enable or disable the display of these labels, just as I can now display my gender, birthday, system specs, and other preferences.

there's basically zero data for notebooks, if you look at the member stats screen. i'll add more tags for existing threads. don't worry

Perhaps the badges should only exist @ all if in their respective sections users have a certain amount of "rates"? Until that number is reached, no badges for that section, and that's just for the lowest badge: "higher tier" badges should require a higher number.

To be sure, I am not worried. I can and do fix notebooks as a large percentage of broken systems that come into my shop are notebooks. That's great for business but in reality, at this stage in my career, I prefer to help users fix their own computer problems - but notebooks, being so proprietary, don't lend themselves to that.

LOL Okay. I can live with my lonely "Long Service" tag.

This website/forum is so well done technically speaking it blows my mind, I just can't get over how well optimized it is. The automatic edits to avoid double posts, the insert image, I mean every little detail is just so well done, lol.

I still think there needs to be a rule on size of signature, like my sig with the picture of speedtest should not be allowed, and the guy who has "do not flash your BIOS in massive red letters in his sig is annoying when scrolling down long posts, a little bit of minimalism in the signature would take this website from 9/10 to 10/10.

Ah man, they took away my motherboards expert badge... I should have kept my mouth shut. sigh.
