Frustrating "BOOT MGR" error

CP, if you need a messenger program to use, and you have AIM, Yahoo, etc. you should really check out trillian.

You use it? yeah seems like MSN and AIM both cause my PC to crash :(

I use to use it, I know it works good. Only chat I use anymore is Gchat.

If you decide to go the Gchat route, PM me. I'll add ya.

ok so setting it to AHCI didn't work. AIM is not the culprit as last time it wasn't open. So that leaves me with two things. Either disabling that partition with Windows 7 manager or that other app, or running the start up repair from the Windows Disk.

do start up. try the easy thing first.

Shit man - this really sucks as I have been watching this thread and hoping that you would get this figured out:(
Here is to hoping that you find the solution soon:taost:

I would try the Window disk repair option first... Then throw the board out the window and buy another one - but that is just me:roll:

I'll give that a shot tomorrow, going to bed soon. I changed one last thing to AHCI in the BIOS, if that doesn't do it by the time I'm back from work tomorrow, then startup repair it is. Windows 7 Manager only finds one partition, so there is nothing to disable.

Does, anything look off here?

D should not be active as there's no OS on it(is there?). but if BIOS boots the SSD first it's not a problem. it's also weird that there's 196MiB of free space.

There is no OS on it, that drive is empty, just has my docs and stuff on it. :banghead:

Ya, D drive shouldn't be Active and you need to get rid of that System Reserved partition. Windows makes a mess of things when setting up partitions, try 3rd party software. The only drive that needs to be Active is your OS partition, USB sticks and External drives will also format to Active, they should be changed to Inactive as well (will not affect duel booting), see pic below.

I'm going to try Acronis then, Windows 7 Manager is not letting me change anything.

These operations should be done in DOS, see if you can create a rescue CD. Boot to the rescue CD and set the OS partition Active, set other partitions Inactive including USB sticks, etc; Delete the System Reserved space and re-size the partition.

When I did my x58 build my old Acronis and Paragon disk didn't work anymore so I formatted with Windows to get by and basically ended up with some of your issues, missing bootmgr, backup recoveries crashing, etc. I eventually found working software (Paragon Hard Disk Manager 2010 CD Based on WinPE and Acronis Disk Director v11) and started all over from scratch using Paragon Hard Disk Manager (it was time for some HDD maintenance anyways).

1. I deleted the array and disabled raid in the bios.

2. Ran a single pass, low level format on all disk space including boot sectors.

3. Re-enabled raid in the bios and set-up a new array.

4. Created partitions with Paragon, set OS partition Primary Active and all other partitions Inactive....Haven't had a problem since.

If you want to go the extra yard you can also align the partitions once you install Windows. If you hurry can still download the Paragon Alignment tool for free. Paragon has made their Alignment Tool free for download as part of a promotion, x86 and x64. Just fill in the data at the link below and they'll send you an email with download links and registration info.

Thanks guys, I'll look into this and report back. :toast:

Ok, for now I ran the startup repair from the Windows Disk. Said it found some issues so I repaired them and restarted. Let's see if this does the trick!

Jesus Fuck!

Do not do that, OP. Do not delete System Reserved after Windows installation. It contains the kernel and basically everything you need to boot Windows. It's created by Windows installer, for the purpose of booting the system before loading the BitLocker drivers.

So far it's good, but it hasn't even been a day yet so we'll have to wait and see.

Dude, you need to cool-it with the drama queen theatrics. Have you ever removed the 100Mb partition after formatting with Windows? I have, more than once actually and the system boots up just fine. The 100Mb partition is not the main boot partition or boot drive, but serve only as a backup. The partition is for Bitlocker, the partition can be avoided altogether by not formatting with Windows. Bitlocker on the boot drive is overkill imo, most people don't use Bitlocker anyways, probably because most boards don't have native TPM support which is a requirement for Bitlocker. The main boot files are on the OS partition.

@ Chicken Patty,
As for running a startup repair with the Windows CD, just a band-aid. If the system hard crash the bootmgr still have two Active partitions to choose from. When you have some extra time you need to setup your partitions the right way to avoid future problems, look at my pic above then look at yours. Hope it works out for you.
