A few weeks ago I decided to launch a play through of Dragon Age II; a game that holds an impressive 82 rating on metacritic PC critic reviews and a dismal 4.5 score by fan reviews.

The game was rushed, re-uses cave/dungeon layouts, drops enemies for imaginary ceilings making tactics pointless, mages are OP (as in all DA games), limits you to basically one city and a few surroundings, the story plays out basically the same regardless of choices, armor is basic for the protagonist and removed completely from any followers, in a nutshell the game was "console-ize" for the hack and slash gamer crowd. Guilty as charged of all those sins.

Thing is...the game is not really bad;

The graphics actually hold up well compared the the original DA that precedes it by only two years.
The protagonist is interesting, more so then the beloved commander Sheppard in ME (IMHO) and Bioware stopped going to the "super soldier" backstory as they did with every RPG since KOTOR (hello jedi knock offs - spirit monks, spectres, grey wardens)
The story is interesting (if you find politics interesting) and wasn't plagiarized from the LOTR story as the original DA did.
The combat isn't awful, not great but I have seen much worse.
The side quests actually have a payoff if you make it to the third act rather then the typical fetch and kill quests of too many RPGs
I also think the companions are better in DA II then DA, Morrigan and Alistair are great but the rest of the DA cast is a snooze. Varric, Anders, and Isabella are some of the better personalities Bioware has written and VO-ed.

Any games that you enjoy that other people find dreadful?

Duke Nukem Forever. No one liked the game but I enjoyed it but I only paid $4 for it including the DLC The Doctor Who Cloned Me.

Duke Nukem Forever. This was a game that was thoroughly panned by critics for numerous reasons from jokes being totally un-pc (that’s the point), to limited weapons, and no cover and only ok graphics.

Thing is, if you stop taking stuff too seriously, it’s actually a fun game! I quite enjoyed it...twice, and there are numerous forum members and RL friends who enjoyed it.

P.S. this was the first game that came to mind on the suck but don’t category. I’m sure I will come up with more.

KIngdoms of Amulur comes to mind. It was a game that got a lot of hate when it was released and can be regularly had for $3 or less. The thing for me is that the game runs great on PC (250 FPS at 4K) and for me it is the first Action RPG played in the 3rd person. With over 100 hrs of quests and side quests. It is still a game I play every once in a while.

One more: Star Trek (2013). It came out between the Star Trek reboot and Star Trek: Into Darkness. Most pro reviews and Metacritic have ratings below 50%. You can’t even buy it on Steam anymore ( you CAN do like I did a couple years ago and buy a key on Amazon, which activates via Steam).

The co-op never really got fixed, but the other bugs did, which actually made for a pretty fun SP shooter as a time-waster, good for 12 or so hours.

I never played Aliens: Colonial Marines until last year. And I still haven't played it without TemplarGFX's ACM Overhaul V5 mod. Without which(or one of the earlier versions) it supposedly sucks pretty bad. But with it I found it rather enjoyable. And I'm looking forward to giving it another play through when he finishes V6.

Anywho...I don't know if that qualifies as relevant to the thread. But it is a game that many people would say sucks. Which in fact doesn't really suck. It's just a little broken in its original form.

I am a big fan of Advent Rising. The game had a huge launch and some kind of $1 million dollar contest or some thing like that with the console release. But the game didn't take well and was given mediocre reviews. Folks complained that the game was a poor take off of Halo. I felt the story was better than Halo and the combat was a lot better.

I played it on PC - it was the only game I ever pre-ordered and I don't regret it. One of my favorite games. I've played through it a good 9 or 10 times.

Definitely Postal 2, it's just too out of whack not to fall in love with the 100% stereotypical characters they've created along with the Postal dude's attitude and great one-liners.

Another one I'd say is RAGE. Some people didn't like it, but I never understood why. It's graphics were great at the time and the gameplay mechanics were enjoyable for me.

Alpha Protocol which has a lot of flaws but it's a decent game in terms of story and character development.

I genuinely miss playing CoD WaW.
Imo it's better than MW 1,2 and 3.

Mass effect Andromeda....
On console it was so glitchy I barely made it through.. it has been out for awhile before they put it on Origin Access and I reluctantly downloaded it and much to my surprise the game was fixed and looked good.

I have to say that is definitely one that I felt was way better than it got a reputation for. I ended up playing it twice with around 100 hours each.

Another that comes to mind is AC III the original, if you like that franchise.
After 3 extremely good games with Ezio, people were used to how the game should be then came along Connor who was nothing like Ezio, and a lot of people hated that game just for that. I think its about 1 year ago I tried to replay it and found it a lot better 2nd time arround than the 1st.

I actually started this up a couple of weeks ago and am loving the story and gameplay. I love the ME franchise, but held off on Andromeda due to all the bad reviews hoping it would get worked out. Started my kids on the ME series and decided to dive into Andromeda myself. I have not been disappointed and it appears to me MOST of the bugs have been fixed.

legend of korra people told me it was an average repetitive beat-em-up cash grab with ps1 graphics and short campaign and I was prone to listen as I had disappointments with tv series ending, but I picked it up and it was ok power variations and combos made for entertaining fight encounters

cities freakin exxx elll.... the city builder game that killed the genre before "sim city" societal nightmare as well. only good thing about the latter was some of the visual style at the time.

the former had the most drama of any citybuilder game ever. the most turbulent game forum, the complete lack of optimization. It chokes on my Xeon 8C16T machine, it's a slide show. it's a mess, xxl is even worse I hear and they are gonna go xxxl. like what's the freakin point?
