A few weeks ago I decided to launch a play through of Dragon Age II; a game that holds an impressive 82 rating on metacritic PC critic reviews and a dismal 4.5 score by fan reviews.
The game was rushed, re-uses cave/dungeon layouts, drops enemies for imaginary ceilings making tactics pointless, mages are OP (as in all DA games), limits you to basically one city and a few surroundings, the story plays out basically the same regardless of choices, armor is basic for the protagonist and removed completely from any followers, in a nutshell the game was "console-ize" for the hack and slash gamer crowd. Guilty as charged of all those sins.
Thing is...the game is not really bad;
The graphics actually hold up well compared the the original DA that precedes it by only two years.
The protagonist is interesting, more so then the beloved commander Sheppard in ME (IMHO) and Bioware stopped going to the "super soldier" backstory as they did with every RPG since KOTOR (hello jedi knock offs - spirit monks, spectres, grey wardens)
The story is interesting (if you find politics interesting) and wasn't plagiarized from the LOTR story as the original DA did.
The combat isn't awful, not great but I have seen much worse.
The side quests actually have a payoff if you make it to the third act rather then the typical fetch and kill quests of too many RPGs
I also think the companions are better in DA II then DA, Morrigan and Alistair are great but the rest of the DA cast is a snooze. Varric, Anders, and Isabella are some of the better personalities Bioware has written and VO-ed.
