Quick question, how much of a performance difference is a card with GDDR3 or DDR2?

I am looking over 2 cards(for reviews only), the 9400GT or the 8600GT, the 9400GT has 512MB with 128bit, and a 1GB with 128bit, but the 9400GT series is DDR2. While the 8600GT only has 256MB with 128bit, but is GDDR3.

i will put in this way. a friend has a 8600gt with 256 ddr3 and its bandwith is of 25.3 gb while mine one has 512 mb ddr2 and my bandwith is of 12.8 gb. conclusion = half bandwith = less performance

That pretty much sums it up. If you really want a good idea of how much GDDR2 bottlnecks current cards look up a review that covers the 9600GSO 384GDDR3 and 512GDDR2 models. You'll find that even though there's more ram on the GDDR2 model that the GDDR3 version outperforms it.

I am talking about PCI cards tho, so the bandwidth on the 8600GT is not 25.3:

what is worse, my videocard is pcie and has almost the same bandwith of that one, that makes me feel like a moron :cry::cry:

You should think twice before buying a card with only 128bit

128 bit is fine if he's only using it for physx.

u2konline, what do you plan on using this card for?

There are 9400gt's and 9500gt's PCI video cards, those are clearly the best despite only having DDR2 memory. But at this point i am not sure what the stats are on those 2 cards, i will find out when i get one of them, or if i come across the information.

Anyways,

u2konline, what do you plan on using this card for?
I don't have it yet. But if i do buy it, its going to be for my secondary computer, i use PCI cards for gaming, if you didn't know already. I think i said this many many times. Hell , i figure everyone knew by now, not only on this forum, but other forums which i post on  I am a PCI gamer. And until they stop making them, well i will keep using them. Please don't start a whole new discussion , i talk about this subjec to death ha.

My 6200 and 2400HD has 64bit, runs games just fine.

Can you post your GPU-Z please :)

men, u can make a whole pc for 400 bucks on newegg, so DO IT

Seconded, why waste money on outdated technology? Save the money and put it towards a whole new setup.

Especially when the fastest PCI card is only about 1/20th of the speed of the current cards.

Well if you have a good reason to keep spending money on outdated hardware, lets hear it. :nutkick:

At the end of the day it's your money, so do what you want with it.

I just like PCI thats all. I have been using the same computer since 2000, and i have been using PCI cards since mid/late 2005, never really had a problem with them, never died me, or anything. Plus i always found a way around performance issues from my Radeon 7000, to my 2400HD now. I know the hardware is old, but old hardware despite it being old, doesn't mean it can not play games well or do other stuff well.

I am fully aware of PCIE cards, i know how well they perform, but i am a pci guy. I just prefer to use PCI cards. My gaming performance is just fine, and i do everything just fine, so i am not complaining. I plan to use PCI cards forever, however when they finally stop making them, i will stop buying them obviously, and then i will move on to PCIE. But i will never stop using them, because my P3 only has PCI.

We can discuss this all day lol, but i just like PCI and hey a graphics card is all but a graphics card, shouldn't matter what someone uses.

reminds me of people who play really old games like delta force for example (not talking about the classics like tetris :P), its time you let them die like all technology eventualy will.

**sighs**@post 14 .... Waste of funds u2konline.....

EDIT:
I love my Socket A based PC. Would I buy anything to repair/upgrade it? No.

This is what they are tryign to get across. PCI only has so much bandwidth ability, upgrading from a HD2400 to a 9400 isn't going to get you much if any performance, maybe going to a 8600 would. But your processors clock speed is almost slower than a 8600.

I don't care about bottlenecks, but in this case it's like trying to fit a semi into a 1 stall garage for cars.

You can keep spending minor money and buying PCI cards, but truth of the matter is, they will be the lowest cards of each generation, and will be comparable in power, not an upgrade. So would be better just to let the comp age.

My bike works perfectly fine, but it isn't an efficient way for me to get to work when it's been -25 out the last week. $40 (cheap athlon dual core), $45(cheap mobo), $25 (2gb ddr2), $30 (HEC 585w psu). Do that then buy a graphics card, that computer would be a rocketship compared to what you are running and for $150. A PCI gfx card is out dated, I'm betting it's not the cheapest, I know AGP cards are crazy priced.

There is nothing wrong with old games, or old hardware. I have a n64, psone, saturn(2 of them), 3 different dreamcast consoles in 3 different colors(blue, black, grey), neo geo, 6 arcade machines, xbox one, just recently bought a gamecube a few months back, 3DO, and i have a computer with over 400 pc games. I play my saturn and xbox one the most.
Alot of people play old games, or maybe even use old hardware, shouldn't be a big deal to others.

Maybe you don't already know, but i am not buying the 8600GT or the 9 series PCI card for my Intel Pentium III. Those cards will be for my new secondary rig. My last PCI card which i plan to buy for my Intel P3 will be the 8400GS.

They play my games just fine, so i am not complaining, neither am i having trouble with playing my games  so i am having fun.

I spent 135 dollars on my 2400HD, didn't seem right, but i was in the store, had the money in my pocket, was blown away by the box art , so i said cool, i bought it, and as of right now, its not worth 135 dollars, more like 75.

However, just to note, my next PCI buy is the 8400GS for my p3 , either the BFG or the albatron version or sparkle, i plan to spend under 90 for them. As for the other pci cards, the 8500gt or the 8600gt or the 9 series i will spend under 100 for them.

HD2400 Pro is better. I am sorry, as everyone else knows I am not judgemental, but you know when something isn't right when I chime in and post like that.

Stick with what you have until you can afford a whole brand new pc. IF you were/are planning on purchasing that 8600GT for a mini ITX platform then so be it bcuz that would make a pretty decent LAN gamers build.

This is what i am doing with PCI.

For my Intel Pentium III,

I plan to keep my BFG OC 6200, and my Visiontek 2400HD. I plan to buy the Diamond 9250 256MB 128bit card as a backup old Radeon Card. And i plan to buy my last PCI card for my Intel Pentium III the 8400GS. I have to buy a certain brand , because i have a small tower, so the BFG 8400GS seen here:
http://www.bfgtech.com/bfgr84512gsp.aspx

I really want this one because my BFG 6200 works so great, so the BFG 8400GS will be awesome. But it looks to be the same size as the PNY, which i bought for 85 dollars a while back, and had to take back, because the card is not low profile. So i am looking into buying the Sparkle 8400GS(fan or no fan) or buy the Albatron 8400GS, or the Jaton 8400GS.
Either one of them will be my last PCI card i buy.
I plan to get rid of the Radeon 7000, Evga 6200, Jaton FX5200, Evga 5200, and 3dfuzion FX5500.

For my Secondary Computer, most likely a Gateway, Intel Pentium Dual core, or something else

I plan to use PCI. Which PCI card i have no idea, i have see what i can get. But its either going to be out of the following:

Albatron 8500GT, 8600GT, or Sparkle 9400 or Sparkle 9500GT. But until i am able to get one of them, i plan to use my Visiontek 2400HD on my new rig. Now once i get one of the 4 cards above, i will put aside the 2400HD and keep it for backup. Whenever PCI cards officially die for good, and stop being made, then and only will i start buying PCIE cards for my new secondary rig. But i will always use PCI, because of my Amazing Pentium III.

PEACE

Those cards are garbage and a waste of money. $79 for a 9400? You can get a 3850 for that price that will blow it away. If your upgrading to a dual core for the second computer the mobo you would end up getting will have a PCI-E slot, please use it.

There is no reason in the world to use a PCI card, if the world thought "this works why upgrade" we would still be using horses and fashioning spears out of rocks to hunt animals with. If someone offered me a lamborghini or a escort, and put them both at the same price of lets say $100,000. I would choose the lambo, I have had an escort and it worked just fine, but why would I pay an obscene amount of money for something that obviously isn't worth that. Look at it that way, your choosing the escort for a lambo price.

It's just a tip, don't waste $80 on a 9400gt.

wait a minute, are you still gonna buy a new pc with a core2 cpu and use a PCI card with it

why,

wait a minute, are you still gonna buy a new pc with a core2 cpu and use a PCI card with it

why,

When i do get ready to buy my secondary computer, i have no idea which one i am getting, all i know its going to be a Gateway/Intel , with a Intel chip. Could be a Pentium Dual core, or a Dual core or a Dual core 2, or maybe even a Quad , who knows. But yes, even tho this new rig will have PCIE slots, i plan to buy a 8500GT or 8600GT or one of the 9 series PCI cards for it.

Why?

I already said why above ha. I am a PCI gamer dude, and until they officially stop making them, i will move on to PCIE, for my new rig anyway. I really have no idea when they plan to stop, but things are looking a bit grim lol. Visiontek told me, they have no plans to make anymore new PCI cards, even tho i think they are lying.

Sorry folks, but as i said i am a PCI gamer, end of story. I scanned my 2400HD :)
Note, i use the 8.12 drivers, just added the disc, the box is somewhere.

Sorry dude, but there is absolutely NO LOGIC in your thinking whatsoever.

HAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAAA LMAO
