I just bought my MSI 460 GTX 1GB now. its in my car.

cant wait to go home and install it :D.

i will overclock it to make it faster than any 470, 5870. lol lol :p.

i paid $390 for it, so i will make sure to juice it as much as i can without breaking it.

MSI has a bios updating tool which can look for a new bios and install it for me safely.

so i guess i can use it to install the new bios if available to increase the fan speed and voltage for further overclocking.

good luck with that. you could have gotten a gtx480 for that much. what a waste of $390

uhh yeah while bricking your card.

maybe i will be able to get another 2GB of ram module or 4gb of quality brand in the future to swap my old ram.

maybe something like Silicon Power X-POWER OVERCLOCKING 2GB DDR2-1066 (PC-8500).

jesus those prices are crazy high.

you can get a gtx460 here for $230 and a gtx480 here sometimes for $360 to 400 if you shop at the right places

what do u think of Silicon Power X-POWER OVERCLOCKING 2GB DDR2-1066 (PC-8500) ?

i have 3GB of generic DDR2 memory now. they are at 667mhz speed.

do u think i should swap them for something better for better CPU overclocking and as such??

to be dual channel, do i have to have 4GB of ram or separate 2GB of ram module to be dual channel??

how does it work?

your either need 2gb of ram where each stick is 1gb each. (do the math) and then for 4gb you need both sticks to be 2gb

yeah it can because the memory doesnt communicate and the memory is slow so

also the more memory slots you populate the more stress it puts on the nb making cpu overclocking harder. the sweet spot is 2 sticks

how about Crucial 2GB DDR2, 240-pin DIMM, PC2-6400 or KINGSTON ValueRAM 2GB DDR2 800MHz Lifetime warranty ?

any significant difference between 1066mhz and 800mhz?

hey man, i keep getting werid issues ever since i installed the new card.

i was gettng shut downs after increasing the gpu core voltage more than 1037v.

also i noticed that my CPU clocks somehow played a role in getting shutdowns after i instaled the new card!!!

so i downclocked the cpu, and increased the gpu clocks, so no more shut downs.

but now when i switch on my pc, the monitors turns on but there is a blackscreen.

i dont know what happened. it all happned since i installed the new card.

and also the performanc gain is like 10 to 13 fps over my old gts 250, based on Just Cause 2 benchmarks.

what could be wrong? u think its my PSU?

That may well be your advice...but while 500w may be enough power, these power supplies are made very cleaply and do not boast great efficiency at all, very low amperage on the 12v rails. keep using it at your own risk IMO, but like CDdude says, he's lucky his rig is low end.

quad core, 5870, 6gb, etc? try that and tell me how it goes

don't get me wrong I sincerely hope the 500w PSU lasts and lasts and keeps giving your rig going, it's just a risk I wouldn't take.

Nope, I stand by what I said. The 12 volt rail on a 500w PSU is 20 amps, that's 240 watts, plenty for a GTX 460 (even over clocked). The quality is not low, it's just not as high as current PSU's, two very different arguments. Efficiency? REALLY? Who truly cares? To save 10% at the wall is $10 to $20 a year on a heavily used machine, 12 hours a day (I've done the math).

I wouldn't recommend someone buy a generic PSU if they can afford something better but if that's what you currently have don't change. The probability of your PSU taking your PC with it if it dies is low but it can happen... if you have some serious dollars spent on that system, yes protect it with higher quality parts. If you have a system worth less than $750, a generic supply will be just fine and you can spend money on something more important.

You seem like a smart guy so i assume you know that the lesser quality parts inside the PSU means the more likely the PSU will kill itself when running hardware. Now if the OP is gaming which is what i assume he's going to be doing with his GTX 460 as well as the rest of the components inside the system, then you're gonna be sucking up more juice as opposed to him doing something more simple, like internet, checking email, making word documents etc. So, what that means is that if he does keep and use the PSU for such a task, it's gonna me much more demanding on those lesser quality parts, now does this mean it's gonna kill itself as soon as he turns it on?, probably not, does that mean the PSU won't last him a couple weeks?, probably not. But does it mean that that cheap PSU won't probably last him for a good couple years while maintaining clean power to his parts? yes, more likely. Because his system is lower end, yes he will be able to maintain a long life span with that PSU. But again, you should NEVER be content with throwing in some shitty generic PSU into any build unless all you're looking for is to play Solitaire. The PSU is a very key component to your system, it's the heart... and if the heart dies, it can/will take other parts with it. So unless he's giving the computer to his grandma to play internet chess all day, i HIGHLY recommend to get a more quality PSU sometime down the line, it doesn't have to be now or next week. But you want to have clean and quality power delivered to your system, and you can only get that from well known quality brands.

And to add the fact that he wants to overclock... oh hells no would i run that on a shit PSU.
