GPU bricked after CPU overclock?

My graphics card (r9 280x) bricked (no display) after i overclocked my cpu and dram.

specs:

MB : Asus P6T (the base one)
Cpu : Xeon x5690
Ram : 20gb 8+8+4 1333mhz
the bricked gpu : r9 280x vapor-x tri-x
psu : 550w chinese bomb (rx-550au)

I’ve been overclocking my cpu for about a week and trying to make it more stable anyways ive tried this settings :

Cpu Ratio settings: [26.0]
BLCK Frequency: [176.0]
PCIE Frequency: [100] (default)
DRAM Frequency: [DDR3-1764]
ULCK Frequency: [3528MHz]
QPI Link Data Rate: [7763MT/s]

CPU Voltage [1.35v]

Load-Line Calibration [Enabled]
CPU Spread Spectrum [Disabled]
PCIE Spread Spectrum [Disabled]

everything else is default, anyways i tried this same settings before but with dual channel 8x2 but it didnt overclock the ram and it actually booted into widows and tried some games but wasnt stable (screen freeze), so i was trying it again when i got a 4gb ram stick, when i saved the settings above my pc turned off and then back on (as normal) but with no display, i assumed it’s because i overclocked my ram too much so i removed my cmos battery and reset my bios, still no display, never thought it was a gpu issue because i didn’t overclock the gpu or touch it or anything, but after trying different ram sticks and still no display i tried removing my gpu from the motherboard and to my surprise my keyboard actually lit up (didnt light up when my gpu was plugged) , i tried another pc with complete diffrent components (H61 , i5-3470) yet no display, i assumed my gpu bios got corrupted or something so i tried a friend’s computer who had a modern spec computer (Ryzen 3400GE or something and a aorus motherboard idk which one but it had a decent bios which i needed to change my settings to integrated GPU) anyways it gave me no display as expected, booted into integrated gpu with my r9 in the PCIE Slot 1,
my r9 appeared in device manger as microsoft basic display adapter, good news so far, flashed bios inside windows and it was flashed successfully, booted into bios from the integrated gpu and changed the settings to PCIE Slot 1, yet no display, tried PCIE slot 2, same results tried changing the two power cables for my gpu still no display tried flashing a newer bios (inside Win10) still no display, i assumed maybe it couldnt flash inside windows so i flashed a usb stick to freeDOS and flashed from there and also no display tried flashing, i tried flashing another bios for a TOXIC edition r9 280x and not vapor-x and still no display, back to my main pc the (p6t with x5690) no display also, idk what to try next, any suggestions ? and thanks for everyone who actually cares (sorry for my bad english its not my native language)

-thanks again

Could potentially have been the culprit if it sent a problematic spike down the 12v. What's odd is nothing else got damaged in the process.

X58 is such a power pig when you overclock it.

I went through a few 850w PSU's.

Get a new PSU, fix your RAM mismatch mess, and start over.

Yep, better off to get a 3x4 GB kit, like I did in '20.

Never cheap out with the PSU, OP! That is most likely the one to blame here.

Good luck overclocking a mixed/mismatched memory setup.
Actually X58 is kinda forgiving with mixed RAM from my experience :D

Tried practically any possible combo and no problems ever

6x4 is the way to go or even 6x8 ;)

However, with the Asus P6T6 WS revolution, Windows 7 showed clear signs of RAM instability with the same 10 GB (and when I used another stick instead as well, to get 14 GB) that was OK with my Asus P6T Deluxe, would get "BAD_POOL_HEADER" and "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA" BSODs from Windows 7. :(

With P6T SE (@P6T) and P6X58D-E, everything just works. Really, I've tried about all the DDR3 I've had without issues :D

edit: I have also a R3G, should try that as well...

I ended up getting a RAM kit anyways and I also cleaned the RAM slots with isopropyl alcohol. I guess I should have cleaned the RAM slots first, because I got the motherboard used from eBay in 2019.

I have to quit looking at these threads.

I sold my X58 setup and I still regret it.

Edit:

Actually, I cant, this is my section haha :D

4-sticks? For quad-channel? X58, comes in threes for channels. Never was a quad-channel platform. Quad-channel started with X79 or X99.

In fact, X299, is starting to look like "the new X58, but in quad-channel". That will be much like X58 was in the late-2010s.

Read my post again, six times the sticks. ;)

You mean just use all the six slots? Yes, that would be like a dream, but I couldn't find the sticks I wanted.

well maybe but i dont think so the psu isnt the worst looking chinese shi and feels heavy
Weight is a misconception for build quality, replace it, follow the advice here, you came for help, do it

I have 3x4 Corsair and 3x4 HyperX for X58 myself. Xeon X5675 (thanks to @MachineLearning for donating that :) ) and Asus P6X58D-E as a board. I have also a Rampage III Gene & i7-950 :toast:

@OP, have you tried another graphics card in your original system (P6T)? Just to check it's not just the R9 280 that's faulty?

f the PSU decided to half-ass it's job and send out some very out-of-spec voltages then maybe it's not just the GPU that's got a problem. At which point the likelihood is you will not be able to BIOS flash your way to a fix.

well i never thought it would come from the psu actually because like i said ive been rebooting my pc about 30 times a day and increasing cpu voltage.

and no i didnt try i different gpu on my main (P6T) when i could i will.

-thanks for replying

I was just trying, and as I said i tried it before with dual 8s and didnt overclock and its the exact same ram. So it shouldnt break anything, right..?

Have you changed power supplies yet?

If there was damage done by the PSU, you can't fix that now. It's too late for that. Fix the PSU problem first. Then fix the RAM mismatch problem. Then decide if the GPU is good or bad.

OK, so you mean 6 4 GB sticks. ;)
