Hi,
What's the go with such high prices for 2nd hand graphics cards? A friend mentioned to me that the bitcoin mining people are buying up, plus there is a semiconductor shortage at the moment.

Prices here in Australia are ridiculous. Over $1000 for a new RX5700XT and over $600 for an old GTX1080.

This is the answer you're looking for.

The (crystal ball) consensus is that it won't be better until this time next year-ish.

You also forgot Covid, which has been another major factor. People have been stuck at home and bored.

I don't have a clue what percentage of the global market USA makes up, but I reckon we buy a decent chunk of the world's GPUs? So the "Stimulus Checks" have had a huge impact on the supply. I've even heard some people call this 3rd round their "GPU stimulus".

And the cryptocurrency mining - well, I haven't seen anyone discuss this angle: let's say you weren't a "miner" per se, and you consider yourself a "gamer" - well, thanks to mining, you can now afford to buy a GPU you would not have even considered previously, as it will [at the very least partially] "pay for itself" now.

My son had a 1070 in his PC and when I asked him if he wanted a new 3000 series GPU he told me: "all of my games are running fine already so, I don't need a new GPU dad". (Talk about making a father proud! :D) Well, since I have a MicroCenter near me I'm able to wait in line after I drop my kids at school and I managed to eventually pickup a 3080 for myself (no way in Hell would I spend that much* on a GPU without mining paying for it!) after I had first bought a 3070 a couple weeks previously, and then I decided to go ahead and buy a 3060 Ti for my son. Once I showed him the card, I could tell he was excited and did really want it, he had just been trying to be frugal earlier - I explained to him that all he had to do, was turn on mining while he wasn't using the GPU to game on and it would pay for itself.

* - to expand on that: I'd never paid over $300 for a GPU before and I'd been buying GPUs for decades, going back to the S3 Virge, Rendition Verite V1000, Riva TNT, Monster 3D, Voodoo FX, etc, etc, etc... I'd learned to wait for the midrange cards which were usually released after the low end and high end cards came out, and they were usually priced at around $200 - $250. W/recent gen cards like the 1070 and the 5700XT, I had to find "open box" ones to hit that under $300 price point and I had been lucky enough to do so.

It's a problem of several factors. Mining and scalping being the two biggest issues where they use bots to scan for availability and buy them quickly. Jensun Huang said a while back that there are also shortages of PCBs and components to go on the cards. The Pandemic has had 2 negative effects on supply. Transportation issues and the rise of gaming since so many people are quarantined and unable to work so they are bored at home.

All of the above. Honestly it's a bad time to build a gaming pc. My motherboard has doubled in price to what the Godlike used to cost. I could sell my used 1070 for what I paid for it new with warranty. Unless you have extra money burning a hole in your pocket stay with what you have and look for used deals online in your area, not everyone is scalping their used cards.

Looking at the matter pragmatically. While the supply is still there a prebuild is the best decision to make if you want to get something new.

It's a no go until further notice. In the mean time generating insane traffic to websites coming from frustrated GPUless people.

Maybe i am wrong but this could be over soon, in my country stock is strong and nobody seems to be very interested in buying 6700 XT's at 1200 euros, you can take your pick of 6700 xt, from asrock to asus, sapphire, gigabyte, all brands and plenty to buy, both from computer store and scalpers who sell them at 900 euros, cheaper than stores :) .
Then you have your 3060, 3060 ti, 3070, 3080..... not so many but there is stock at ridiculous prices.
Only one thing has to happen, either covid restrictions get minimal and we get to go on with our lives with masks and all or mining crashes, either of this two happens and gpu prices will slowly return to normal.
When this absurdity ends i bet these cards will go below msrp and still have a problem selling.
Do not buy anything now! you will be sorry you paid 4-5 times more.

I have a working, quality Asus FX 5200 AGP card from circa 2003 that I can sell you for the bargain price of $899 if you like?

Heck, I can't even remember how much RAM that thing has, now.

Man, you're only about a year late to the party.

Covid, bitcoin, and whatever else in the stars.

Used component prices weren't that affected (at least not where I live) until like october/november iirc. Before the RTX3xxx series came out the prices noticably dropped even. I remember seeing a GTX970 going for €65 on swedish ebay, that stuff is close to €150 now. Laptops however rose sharply with covid.

Yeah the second hand market was more or less normal until november or so.
At that point still 2-3 year warranty 5600 XTs were going for 330$or so and thats considered cheap/normal where I live. 'now its up to 600+'
RX 570 4Gs for sub 100$ and such.

Fast forward to currently, yeah those 570s cost more than what I paid for mine in 2018.:wtf:

Thanks to all for your replies and input. Now we have a transport problem with the Suez Canal being blocked by a bloody big ship. Anyone with knowledge of how that would affect PC part prices in general? I've heard that oil costs will go up, ie petrol/gasoline/diesel prices will increase.

Big names could mislead or they were mislead by their contacts, i think everybody should ignore the noise and avoid buying overpriced GPU's at all costs, let the miners and scalpers fight it out until they run out of money, after all this is just gambling, crypto could crash at any time and gamblers always lose.

I mean, those names are the ones directly seeing the numbers go by in terms of supplies on hand, incoming shipments, etc.
