Has an incorrect Crossfire setup fried my card?

Ive always ran both bridges when running with my 4870 crossfire.

Ive not encounterd any negative effects. & until I do (if ever) I will keep using 2 bridges.

so u did demand your money and a replacement, right?

well not all cards come with one
and 4870x2 only has one connector
wouldn't you think it needs 2 in order to communicate with another?

all I am saying is that you only need 2 for cards before the HD3k series.
You don't have to take my word for it. You ca try it yourself

The 4870x2 only has one connector because the other one is used to link the 2 gpus together.

Using 2 is better than using one. It provides more bandwidth between the cards. Not that it matters much in real world usage, but it's there if you need it.

i couldnt find a difference at all with mine, on 16/16 2.0 and 16/4x 1.1 slots - it doesnt hurt to have both, but if you only have one, no need to buy another.

one works, two works - you just get no benefits to using two.
