when I overclock and add a bit of voltage I hear a slight ringing or humming sound. Is this a capacitor problem?

sounds like cap whine, i dont know how common this is. maybe someone else is experiencing this issue. I personally don't hear it on my GTX 460

I didn't on my old gtx 460 but there is a bit more power here. I wonder if I should return it or if it's common, it is very slight. I'm just very picky about sound.

i'd return the card, caps whine when they are failing or you have a ton of ac ripple.also check your power supply.

humming sound is usually from the PSU, check where exactly the sound comes from.

If its from the PSU, you can hear it if you put your ear near the back of the PSU where it blows out the air.

Strange.... If it happends again, you could check the PSU: Stress the CPU at the same time as the GPU. Launch up OCCT and do linpack or prime95, and launch up furmark or kombustor and stress the GPU. Then you check if the sounds is coming from the motherboard, GPU or the PSU.

Caps dont whine (do they?) Its a choke/coil whine.

You are right, capacitors don't make a whine noise. That would come from a coil. The only way a capacitor could make a noise like that is if it was leaking electrolytic fluid/steam from it heating up. It would be a visible problem with a capacitor. Coil whine just means that it is audible when in operation and not necessarily going to fail soon. Extra stress on a coil can come from failed parts somewhere in the circuit resulting in an audible whine but I doubt that is the case.

IMO It basically boils down to:

If the noise is coming from the card it is most likely fine mechanically/functionally. Although if you replaced it with a new card I doubt you would get another card with coil whine.

Okay you were right it is from the PSU and only when folding. I have had all kinds of cards on this psu with zero trouble including 3 gtx 480's . I never folded with them so It must be the stress on the PSU. The hum or whine is very slight but it is the PSU. Will it kill my PSU? because I'm limited to PSU physical sized on a PSU. Rail drops only to 11.920v with cpu at 4.3ghz and gpu at 772 core, max stress, folding and prime at the same time. From what I can tell thats fine for the rails. Am I wrong? Again it is very slight I doubt I would notice it at all with louder case fans.

Humming sound is not a good sign , but not a bad sign either.... You could say its normal

its very common for Corsair PSU's for example, they tend to make a very light humming sound when under alot of stress, from what ive heard, no PSU's have died from that sound, its the squeeling sound you want to watch out for, when that happends, you need to replace it asap.
my corsair vx550w does a light humming sound sometimes.

But as i said, thats nothing to be worry about right now, but when it starts to squeel or make other noises then just humm's, then its time.

I discovered my humming sound from my PSU after i installed my gtx470 and i removed some fans from the case and it was dead quiet except that humming, then i knew.

It is hard to explain it is almost like a slight high pitched sound. Almost like ringing in your ears but not as loud and fain't.

When i say squeeling, i say loud, really hear-able squeel

here is a video showing how it sounds like -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C4d23F2jehQ

You dont have to replace the PSU until it sounds like that under load.

Here is a funny video showing the same thing, but hes PSU is really f*cked up :D

You dont have to worry ;) if it becomes worse like that in the video, then you should replace it

I bet I just never payed attention before because most of my video cards were much louder under a load and I wouldn't have heard it. I thought it was my monitor at first. Might be time for a bigger case and PSU or just a bigger PSU.

Maybe, but you dont have to rush things now , save money for some real good quality PSU. I understand u've had that PSU quite a while ?

okay this is crazy no other stressing program causes that slight noise , not occt, not furmark and not maxed 3dmark vantage and all list 99 percent stress on the GPU figure that one out.

Only folding does it? Not a big deal really. I've had a few cards make the noise and they are still fine. Turn up the fan to drown out the noise... problem fixed! :toast:

caps can whine, if the electrolyte leaks out. choke coils can whine to, a failing cap can cuase a choke to whine. Lots of things can make noise.

Nope I was wrong it is almost a very very faint beep. I googled it and it is very common for PSU to faintly beep when folding. Hell it's so faint I'm not sure it is my PSU at all WTF only when folding. I am picky about noise. This will irritate me until I stop folding. OCCT won't even make it do it. It is always something with these fuxxking machines. If I turn the folding to the max it is a faint whine so faint I cannot hear it from a foot away but if turn the folding down to half it is the same sound but it pulsates like a beep. This sound is like the faint sound of ringing in your ears but much fainter. Fuxxk it I'm done folding on this card. I bet it's power spikes. These fermis can spike like crazy. I can hear it just enough to bother me when I'm in my chair. I love this card and I ordered a 570 backplate but that 5850 FrozerII for 169.00 is looking good and I'm sure I can sell the back plate. We will see XXXXX!!!. I cannot find the perfect balance of power, noise and convenience . Maybe folding will be handled by my PS3. Good thing my PSU isn't cheap or this could be much worse. Arctic cooler started this silent operation shit with me. Man I long for the days when I didn't know any better. I should kick that old monkey in the ass for teaching me to overclock. Also so fuxxk Zalman and Arctic cooler as well for being so darn silent, bastards spoiled me. turning up the fan now.
