HD 4770 or HD 4850 in Crossfire?

i'm going to be gaming at 1680x1050
so i don't think even 1 single 1GB card is necessary
might be getting a 1920x1080 monitor though..
so the crossfired HD 4770's are going to be my other choice if i decide to go 1920x
if i go 1680x then i'll go 512mb HD4870

i don't know why people always think extra rams only for high resolution and they see the benchmark and the different in performance between 512MB and 1GB in high graphical games or open world games , my friend games now become use more than 512MB ram at default resolution and high resolution specially you want play at 1680x1050 , so can check by yourself see games like (warhead , clear sky , GTA ) and you wan to crossfire two card with 512 ram's so you know in crossfire and sli only one ram will be read , so two card with 512 ram i think it is some kind of wasting , not now maybe but next games will tell you

I thought the same thing till I overclocked each on my system. Bottom line is the HD4770 overclocked can outperform overclocked HD4850. This knowledge is based on personal experience with both cards. (Not taken into account any type of "hard wired" voltage mods)

HD4770 outperforms the HD4850. It's a better video card.

how high did you overclock you 4850s 750?

but it's always better to get one more powerful card than 2 less powerful (that is unless you already had the less powerful one)

You obviously didn't understand what Scrizz meant.

Saying "1 HD4870 over 2 HD4850's? seems like flawed logic to me" does not fit Scrizz's analogy because two 4850s are faster than one 4870, however Scrizz said "but it's always better to get one more powerful card than 2 less powerful" he never said "4870" there are plenty of other one card solutions that are faster than a two card solution.

He never specified which one card or two card models he was talking about and therefore we can not criticise his comment.

Edit:

e.g. for all we know he could of meant a single 4890 or a single 4870X2 or a single GTX280 solution is better than two 4850s or two 4770s.

I'm not debating which solution is better, but I'm saying his comment is too ambiguous to criticise it.

A little more to support the HD4770 over the HD4850.


Single HD4770 OC@900/1000

Havn't even added any juice via software voltage increase.
This was on my first OC attempt.
With some juice and tweaking I think 1000/1100 would be possible.
Sweet thing about it is that no "hard wired" voltage mods are needed to reach these speeds.

Corsair makes a modular 550w hx psu that should work fine for hd4770 xfire. I have Corsair tx650w which is more than enough.

Yeah that is the one.

Modular means that you can connect power to only the devices you want to power. It allows for better cable management because you don't have extra power cables in the way.
In general Corsair makes very good power supplies. I thought it was 550w. It might be a little under powered. Not sure.

TX650 is more than enough for your machine but you will have to deal with the cables. I don't mind the cables though. I'm using an Antec 900 case and it has room to hide the cable out of the way an allow good air flow within the case.

Get something that has good reviews. I have no experience with OCZ PSU. Only Corsair. I know that Corsair is good quality.
