Heatsink on Xeon processor? What?

Hello!

I recently got an Intel Xeon X5650 – 2,67GHz processor with my Dell Precision T5500 ( preused ) and noticed it having a heatsink instead of an in my opinion regular CPU Cooler ( see attached file).

I noticed that on load using World Community Grid Boinc applikation, full load, temperatures went as high as 82 degrees celsius, I think that is around 180 in Fahrenheit. This high number made me really unclear about this being bad for the CPU in the long run or if it will overheat and shut down.

Should I replace it with a active cpu cooler?

That's a relatively normal load temp for an OC'd Nehalem. It's a little high for stock at load, but not outragously bad.

The system probably drives air through the aluminum fins with case fans. It's not perfect, but at the same time, I would not change it unless one plans on OCing.

To be clear, I would not worry about temps at all being "unsafe" until they pass 95C.

That cooloer is supposed to be covered by the air shroud in the case. Did you leave the case open? Remove the shrouds? turn off or remove fans?

I had that issue with a 2P system a few months ago. Until I was able to purchase some different coolers, I just modded some fans to the tops of the coolers. Helped a ton.

My feeling was that it might still have all that, but be loaded with dust. Not sure really. I would make sure all the shroud assemblies to direct air are present.

It will thermal shutdown before it "burns your house down." But I'd keep an eye on it for the proccesor's sake. That's still pretty close to the border. It may just need a dusting or something though.

Im not at home at this moment, but I think some parts are missing, not vital parts though since its been operation tested.

While you are right he is "very close" to peak temp, that's the Tcase temp (heatspreader surface) and the readings he's getting are from the CPU die, so he's likely still more below it than not. But yeah, I think all in all, I'd at least add a fan to the present heatsink if there is room, or replace.

I would just pick up an CM 212 EVO, its cheap and does support 1366 socket and can do the job fine.

You can slap a fan over the top of it or blowing through the sides that should help for now at least until you can get a better cooler for it, the fin design looks like it would benefit greatly from either option.

I use one of those heatsinks on my Xeon, admittedly its upside down and only added for weight.

We use the other one to stand our kettle on by the coal fire.

No, dell workstations are roomy, The fans move smiteloads of air through the roomy case. You have nothing to worry about...

I actually don't think the T5500 will fit a 212 Evo, or any 120mm tower cooler. There is a huge metal bracket that goes right over the CPU area that holds hard drives. The area isn't tall enough for a 120mm tower cooler.

I'd leave it alone. The cooler it comes with works thanks to the huge high volume fan Dell puts right in front of it. They've used this design for the better part of a decade.

Im thinking about using my Fractal Design R4 Chassi, would that work?

Find the missing shroud? Fix the issue at the source. Those workstations have cooled fine for over a decade.
