I remember reading a post on TPU not to long ago that it is possible to change the displayed name string of a video card. In my case I'd like to obfuscate my 4870 to a 2600 PRO

Why would I want to do that you'd ask me well,
[soap]Thing is that well my girfriend will most possibly kick my ass if she found out I've spent part of our vacation money on eheh :D this here fine toy. So I should tell her a bit later :p[/soap]

Like that? As you can see adapter information isn't fully changed, though; HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ati2mtag, each device has a name.
Not sure if you can change chip type and the likes. Device manager isn't changed either, though the original name appears in far more places in the registry. One might change it, otherwise it might help changing the name in the drivers inf's.

Thanks:)

I dont need to mask anything past the name so that should be fine.

can you do that for nvidia too? i'd love to have a good laugh with this in vista.

Be the man and just say I bought a new video card. Deal with it!

:)

Or just hide the fact that you are already telling a good lie. By taking this action to cover yourself up over a little bit of money that you worked for.

IMO

Yeah I know, I know :p But she's THAT kind of person: "you bought a video card:twitch:?!" but you just bought one 2 years ago!"
It's just a silly thing, I plan to tell her by Christmas anyway, heh.
... she knows I wanted this card so bad, hope she doesnt get me another one as a Christmas present or I'll have a crossfire session. And I'm not talking about hardware.

That's when you say, and how many purses have you bought during those 2 years?

LOL... she's kind of a semi-gamer... if you can call it that. She bought all the expansions of The Sims 2 and all known versions of Tomb raider. I gues I could retaliate with that.

I'll just buy her the latest Tomb Raider Underworld. heh

and shoes. and pants. or even better "how much money have you wasted eating out, when you could have just cooked food here?"

its funny when i cook more than the girls i know... they all wonder how i have so much spare money to afford computer parts, when they can 'barely live' off twice my income.

Haha, indeed. I can relate to that :p It's even worse when/if they try to make you buy as much clothing apparel as they do.

Christmas could be funny."I got you that graphics thingy you wanted","oh cough er thanks dear,i'll put it with the one i bought a few weeks ago"," WHAT!!! *@%!##""

:D

I'm curious if I modify my inf instead of the registry will there be any adverse effects like.. I dont know, improper uninstall when I update the ccc & driver?

I'll just safely play with this a bit when I get home, to see what can be changed and how. At this point it's pure curiosity so no more of that girlfriend tomfoolery.:)

:shadedshu

I am very disappointed in you Black Hades. . . .

Getting one of the nicer video cards and not sharing with your GF.:D Point being, be honest with her, even though she will be mad it shouldn't be a reason for you to fight. Unless your relationship is already currently "on the rocks" in that case, my statement could be false.

Talk about twisted sisters...

Yes, and don't forget a million dollars is not a lot anymore - and all those same people - gosh 100 grand you can barely live on it in Cali or NYC - or - you know... :banghead:

(they want to be filthy rich so no matter how much they got...they waste it - it gives them incentive to earn more :D )

Whatever... just please you made me gag...

Ok, so my comment on the thread is - evil anyway...

I'm new here so I have to ask !

Are we sure this guy that needs his real videocard "coveredup" isn't planning on "taking over"
some benchmark stats posts and pages - you know his tiny cheap 2600 kicking buttinski ? :twitch:

Ahh haa - could be, could be... maybe his GF is snickering with him !?!:nutkick:
