Just a quick note: multimeters don't catch the real hardware killer: ripple.

LOL! Not if you want to read a review of something made in the last two years.

If you have a good one it can! :)

fair enough, i missed that. didnt know you can measure ripple with a multimeter, thank you for the info. :) btw, is that your site?

1. You can start with one of these

There are $24 tester I have in my tool box but I just find a spare PSu more valuable.

2. PSU Tier lists are useless ... broad assumptions are mde for a model line based upon 1 test. A 750 watter may be great, a 1050 watter nowhere near great. Which of the following is tue ?

a) Corsair makes great PSUs
b) Corsair makes good PSUs
c) Corsair makes OK PSUs
d) Corsair makes crappy PSUs

Literally, "none of the above" because Corsair doesn't actually "make" any PSUs. If we change "make" to "sells", the answer is "all of the above". You should focus on a specific brand / model series nd then check each size to make sure performance and quality are consistent.

You could substitute Antec and most other PSU brand names in there and the answer would be the same. Seasonic is one name that that doesn't have anything in the bottom category.

3. The Antec CP-850 is a superb PSU ... have one going on 11 years. It has a large form factor (which makes it run exceptionally cool and quieter than just about any PSU with it's power rating. It needs a compatible case to be used. If replacing the PSU and keeping the case, you may have to made the case to make it fit. Like everyone else... Antec has great PSus and crappy PSUs... the CP series is regarded as one of the best PSUs ever made and quiet as a mouse

"For the quiet-seeking computer gaming enthusiast, the CP-850 (along with any of the three compatible cases) is something of a godsend. Fantastically stable power, super low noise at any power load, long expected reliability due to excellent cooling, modular cabling, and all at a price that’s no higher than many high end 6~700W models. "

4. You could build 3 - 5 high end PCs for what it would cost to built a decent PSU testing setup.

5. I have an Antec D85 w/ CP-850 running on a desk right behind me ... it's the only PC we have ever had that was actually "upgraded". The case with its hot swap backplane for all storage, insta swap 2.5" drive superb coolong, front access slide out storage removal.... and large quiet PSU is just to "sweet' to give up. And, as i said up above, your case / PSU are not ATX standard; if you give up the PSU, your will need to buy a new case or mod the one ya got.

It was True Power. It had "known bad" OST caps that would leak, which changes the filtering capacitors values and cause them to output voltages and ripple that is dangerous to your components down stream.
Don't you mean the SmartPower, original True Power and True Power 2.0 with Fuhjyyu capacitors? All from CWT and all more than 15 years ago. OST is something Seasonic liked to use back then, like in the True Power Trio.

Hmm.. Maybe it was the True Power. Or maybe it was the True Power AND the Smart Power. I know there were some OST caps that were popping vent somewhere in there! :D

But you're right. Fuhjyuu caps were popping too.

hi what does PSU Tier lists are useless . means ?

How can i do that . what do you mean ?

i feel the same about 3. The Antec CP-850 is a superb PSU ... have one going on 11 years. when the mobo or gpu broke, I had a 2 fans forgottently disconnected... i think the psu protected the system and auto shut down. it make when i restarded it a sound close to breacker electricity that turns off. antec says owner can not change the fuses. can i check if my has burned one?

And, as i said up above, your case / PSU are not ATX standard; if you give up the PSU, your will need to buy a new case or mod the one ya got.
what do you mean? . my case is antec p183 probably version 1 so it is bigger than regular

the 24 pin would allow me to test what exactly

Antec in my experience has tended to be crap.. Can nobody remember their dodgy PSU series from back in the day that actually -was- killing things? "EarthWatts" or something? 12 YEARS OLD?!

This has been my experience also, that anything & everything made by Antec is actually made to go pooof about 5 mins after you turn it on the 1st time.. And after 12 years: This forum is as close as I would ever want to be to that thing..

Seriously, ditch that p.o.s. and get a real PSU, like an EVGA, Seasonic, or Corsair's mid-to-upper end models, and be happy that you will most likely never have to deal with watching your computer smoldering/melting/burning in the dark of night !

Most Antec EarthWatts are build by Seasonic, others are build by higher tier OEM's like Delta and FSP. So which ones do you call bad? Because I haven't seen them.

The power psu on on the mobo is (on the 24 pin connector) the only green wire jumped to any black wire.
I removed the 24 pin con from a bad mobo, cut green + 3 adjacent ones from the socket, soldered a switch across green & black, , , ,

I then bought this:

https://www.amazon.com/Optimal-Powe...V897PVAMT86&psc=1&refRID=GS7FZP2W5V897PVAMT86

Does not give actual numbers but lights indicate within voltages. There are better ones with digi readouts. Also with mine you can use voltmeter & check actual volts using plugs from psu.

^ This. I have another example that has been chugging along for eleven years without missing a beat.

This PSU was (over) engineered by Delta. and built like a tank. No longer state of the art (old topology with relatively low efficiency by today's standards), but great quality.

Some guts and recap pics here
