So I forgot my main google account password and I have been trying to reset but I am unable to due to not having access to my recovery email or my old phone which was still attached to my google account. Yes I know I should have updated this information but I forgot to.

I am currently logged into to my google account on my PC, but I had to factory reset my phone due to it having some software issues and I need to add my main gmail account to it but I am unable to reset the password. The only reset option I can do is my security question.

If anyone has ran into this issue before or might have an idea that could help me I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you.

You can email Google with this issue and ask them how you can recover your account. Usually they will provide a fixed path for you to follow perhaps after handing over some personal information to verify you are the owner.

Do you by chance sync your browser? Because doing so is extremely smart since even if you switch devices, or reinstall your operating system ,your saved passwords and bookmarks will be present in all of your browsers/devices. So you can just go into saved Loggins ,have it show your password and get in that way.

The other option is contacting google through the "forgotten password" function. If I recall correctly, you'll be required to remember contacts from your lost email, people you may have recently emailed, atleast remember the email address of your recovery email, and possibly the phone number for the recovery phone. If you know enough pertinent information about the account in question they'll send you a recovery link

If you don't have access to your recovery email account (or phone number) any more, I don't think you will be in luck since you won't have any way to prove you are you and that it is your account.

I found this but don't hold your breath: https://www.lifewire.com/how-to-recover-a-forgotten-gmail-password-1172087

My advice is, while you still have access is to setup a new Gmail account then forward any emails you don't want lost to it.

I love password managers!

I feel, for ya, man run into this with them 2 or 3 times and lost . just had to start a new account all over and no old accounts stuff recovery .. it sucked big time . ask them for help or resolve ? may as well ask that tree in your back yard . you'd get better results ..lol..

do backup of like your mail contact info copy and paste it to notepad and stow it in a folder safe and ready for this crap for example that's saved that big headache

I don't as well but still goggle rejected them as bad . I look at it now as can be common with them at any givin time . like him even with the cell phone verify . kinda makes me wonder if accounts were hacked or compromised on there end . or something ? like I saisd each and every time I had to open a new account to got back going .

maybe that password manager is the thing but I guess in'till it borks that some how and your still right back here with this anyway ? I just learned to be ready for it now and not caught with my pants down on things you loose when it occurs .

I do think is all on googles end and if your one of the unlucky ones your just that .

Good news everyone, I was able to reset my password with my backup google account. Thanks for your help and I will make sure to update my info on google in case this happens again.

That’s great. To stop this happening again, I recommend you adding a couple more recovery email addresses, along with a mobile number.

there are a number of password managers available, I use KeePass and a couple mods to customize it. You can sync to a thumb drive or even dropbox. { dont use OneDrive its m$ malware)

EDIT:KeePass gererates passwords pretty fast, but anything over 3000 characters long starts taking a few extra cpu cycles to render it.

Two step works for me if your phone info is the same as it was you should be able to recover it.

Only 20? I wish I only had that many. I have several 100 accounts out there. And it is important not to use the same one on multiple accounts so having a password manager/safe is great - then you only have to remember one password - the one to the safe.

As I noted above, I use SpashID - which I've been using for years. It is a great program with several versions, including one that syncs your PC database to your phone. But IMO, it has gotten too pricy so not sure I would recommend it anymore - though the Windows only (no sync) version is still great. I also use my password safe to keep keep track of credit card information including PINs, a list of my kids' social security numbers, and more.

Other popular ones are,

Just don't write your passwords down. In some places, writing down passwords is a crime! "Physical Security" is just as important as having a good anti-malware solution. The first place badguys, the type that break into your house or office, look is somewhere within arm's reach of your computer chair! So not only do they grab your computer, they got all your passwords too!

How did you know my router password is under my left speaker ?

I heard password managers are also still vulnerable? I still prefer 2FA for added security

Google is one screwed up site nothing works on it I went to yahoo

Care to share? Site seems to work just fine and didn't have a 3 billion + user breach. Just sayin... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

IMO,Electing to use Yahoo over google would be like electing to put bubble gum in your hair. Yahoo sucks, but then again most browsers are crap next to google. First thing I do with a fresh install is disable every other search engine :)

I always have a laugh when someone gives me their email address and it's like WillyphistyrGashATyahoo.net ,or StevendiaperrashAthotmail.com, or Larryshirt waterATaol.com, seriously?! People  its 2018

Because it was not under your keyboard or the right speaker. ;)

I don't know how unless you set the master password as your dog's name or something easy for someone to guess. Truth be told, is any security system 100% secure 100% of the time? No.

I am guessing what you heard about was managers that store their databases in the cloud. Then I supposed you could say they are still vulnerable, but it sure would not be something simple to hack - again, assuming you pick a good, strong, hard to guess password.

In any event, it would be much harder than keeping all your passwords under your keyboard or in an index box on your desk.

For the record, I do not use, or recommend cloud based password managers. But then that is easy for me because I don't travel much anymore, or access my accounts from several different devices (PC, notebook and cell phone, for example).
