Under my instruction an 8 year old girl built a PC.
Pete has been a mate of mine since we were 11, we were in senior school together and have been the best of pals since.
Last Xmas his youngest daughter really wanted a PC so she could play Minecraft and start to do a bit of youtubeing, skype and stuff. So, they came to me for advice.
my idea was that if the girl built the pc she could have it.... if it just sparked a bit of interest it would be great and a fantastic confidence boost.
She is a very bright child....her mother is a Headteacher (and the kids dont follow their Dad thats for sure. ) Shes a sensible kid and knows how dangerous electricity can be.
Anyway.
Last Xmas came and went and we werent able to coordinate a visit to build the computer so the little girl ended up with a massive tub of Nutella as a pressie rather than a PC.
Cut to yesterday.
A phone call from Pete.
"Ger we are on the way to build the PC, I'll bring cakes have you got coffee.?"
Its a 2.5 hour drive from their house to here so in that time i took the PC apart ready for her to put back together . I had built it ready months previously, installed her game and all the necessary safety software so i knew it was all working correctly.
When they arrived i had all the constituent parts laid out on a table and as soon as she walked in i gave her a screwdriver. When i showed her everything her eyes lit up.....she was amazed and obviously understood most of what i was talking about.......she was asking questions..
We spoke about the motherboard and how it connect to the case. What the different parts of the motherboard do and how they receive electricity. How the different components speak to each other and what they do. Then she went on to build the PC....she placed every screw...every cable and connector and even with my tutorial it was done in 1.5 hours.
Then came the nerve wracking bit......turning it on.
I was desperate for it to work, honestly, really desperate because the MotoGP race was starting and i wanted them to bugger off so i could watch it in peace.
Sooooooooooo.
Sweet little 8 year old girl presses the switch and
Nothing.
I, with an exaggerated look of horror said to her " oh no....youve broken it"
Then I flipped the switch on the PSU for her and BINGO (of course......) it worked. She is absolutely delighted, as is her Dad and i think her Mum will be happy too. She logged in to Minecraft and "tested" her new machine.
I forgot to tell her i did this with it......

I didnt overclock it for her build but i matched it with a Radeon HD 6970 and 4 gb ram, 500gb hdd.
i have built pcs with my own kids when they were little, they have grown up surrounded with them so it was a real treat for me to see such joy and excitement from the little girl but not only that.......she was obviously interested in what we were doing.
When they left i watched the bike racing.... Cal Crutchlow (GB) was first ........... brilliant.
Just wanted to share, thats all......
p.s
Pete bought a load of copper off me so now i have 40 quid for a new cooler....
