Their not very "friendly". Heatsinks are MASSIVE, and likely not very effective.

Agreed, I've heard stories that the 1066 ram has issues running 1K well....

I had a good set of OCZ's (black SLI ram) that ran 1000MHz at 3-3-3-9 and were memtest stable at like 2.25V.

Woke up the next morning to a constant beep code from the mobo and no image on my monior. But I will say that was slightly my fault.

Hey everyone. The title pretty much says it all. I need 4GB of RAM that can do around 500MHz (DDR2-1000). My E8400 is at 4GHz (9*450) right now but I don't want to limit myself in the future.

Oh, and if possible, I'd really love for the sticks to be black. And I don't want to spend alot either. I'd really love to spend $30. I know that's alot to ask for. I've seen lots of DDR2-800 cas5 kits for that price, but I dunno if those kits can get to DDR2-1000 since they're already cas5.

So I'd love to get some recommendations on something that is known to clock that high. Thanks! :)

Have you checked these? They are @ 1066 CL5 and black, as you are requesting.

I have 2 kits of these (NOT the same as above) and i have them like this in my P5QL-E:

I have 1.36 in NB volts and 2.02 in DIMM volts and i have successfully passed linpack with 5 passes like this.

What's great about these black PI sticks is that they run really cool: much cooler then my previous 2*2 GB Corsair DHX CL4 @ 800.

If those black PI sticks @ 1066 CL5 are are good as the 7200 CL4 ones, i'd say go for it, not thinking twice.

EDIT

I have my CPU @ 8 * 375 = 3 GHz: i'm only OCing the FSB.

However, some boards thrive at 4x1GB. My old Maximus Formula loved 4x1GB. I took my 4x1GB Firestix to 1300mhz on that board. I've never seen a 2x2GB kit ever do that. Though I do realize this isn't the norm.

i have seen several on XS my old crucial reds included

OMG you are FAR too picky  You can't have everything, you wanted cheap, those sticks are cheap, should reach PC8000 speeds around 2.25v, are black, and even have a nice symbol, and your complaining about 2 tiny red LED lights? :wtf:
I forgot to mention that the RAM also needs to run at exactly 1.85v and the last 3 digits of the model number must be prime.

I know, I know, I'm really picky. Buying anything for me is always this difficult. Sorry guys.

The DDR2-900 Gskill Pi Black sticks look nice (& weird). They were mentioned earlier in the thread too. Looks like the only way to meet (all) my requirements is to fork over some more cash. So right now I think I'm picking the DDR2-900 Pi Blacks. Any last comments?

Don't be so picky and get a kit that generally meets what you want, but are cheaper and have a higher spec, like the PC8500 Black Dragons :p Consider it free OCing headroom. You also don't need memory that works with 1.85v, its just a standard voltage and your board can certainly provide more. The Black Dragons also boot perfectly fine @ 1.8v 800MHz (default setting). By default, no memory kit exceeds a default of 800MHz 1.8v as it is the maximum JEDEC standard.

These ones do meet the dude's criteria: it's just $12 more expensive then the 7200 one.

If by the ones you mentioned you mean these, then they're $2 more expensive and have a much higher voltage requirement.

I was kidding about the 1.85 thing. ;) I hear ya on the advice though. I just don't want to get a cheaper kit and then have my OC limited because my RAM can't OC very well. I'd much rather spend $20 more now to make sure my OC is CPU limited.

Black Dragons are cheaper, they come with free shipping, and even with 2.25v those sticks will barely get warm to the touch, I know, I have a kit of them :D

Must be in a different store, then: either that or those black dragons i linked to aren't the ones you're referring to.

@ original poster: warning. If you end up choosing a black PI set, make sure the height of the heatspreaders isn't a problem.

I know that's a good deal, but honestly, I really wanted something black. I know that's an incredibly stupid reason for declining such a great offer, but it's all i got.
(you people are like salespeople  nah I'm kidding. I like it when people make offers to me)

Stop being pissy. This guy is clearly after looks over raw performance, the Black Dragons have a balance of both. you need to get your head around the fact a lot of DDR2 is now BUDGET, made with cheap ICs and you have to fight for even 1200MHz most of the time, where in the D9 days that was easy.

Thats the best you got? I'd wager as far as PC6400 goes these days, the Black Dragons are amongst the best clockers in the pricerange. Even memory that once used decent ICs now use utter crap, take my HyperX for example. A PC8500 kit should be able to hit 1200MHz, its not asking much, but even that is a challenge. Though on the flipside of the coin.. I may have oddball sticks they like aggressive settings over more relaxed ones. Time will tell.
