So, I'm throwing together an i9 12900k, 32gb ddr5x4, either a 1Tb or 2Tb NVMe, and I'm comparing the Evga and MSI 3080 10Gb vid cards, only placing one (Probably the EVGA: it's shorter by an inch). Going to be running in a tower, so plenty of room, mainly questioning the Power Supply requirements. In running thru online p/s builder's, I'm getting mixed numbers. Anyone have a solid recommendation?

Hi,
Personally all I use is P2 series evga super flower
Wattage wise for that 1000w would be fine.

Well, lets do some addition.
i9 - 241w
NVMe - 20w
EVGA 3080 - 320w (assume double for transients)
DDR5 + Mobo - ?w, assume 100w

This gives us about 100W, to cover the GPU's power spikes. Two I might recommend below:

EVGA SuperNOVA GT 1000 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply

EVGA SuperNOVA P3 1000 W 80+ Platinum Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply

Remember to look at the ATX version. Most are still 2.4 which is almost a decade old, and even some really old ATX V2.31 psus out there.

Some Super Flower and the new Fractal Ion+2 are ATX ver. 2.52, which is about the latest (newest) I have seen.

As for power rating 850W should suffice, but if the price is right can always get a higher rated unit.

Unrelated to the power supply. I thought I should point that using 4x 32GB DIMMS (dual rank) DDR5 is that you will probability be limited to 4400 MT/s without playing around with voltages. It's really hard on the memory controller.

At least 850 and not a cheap unit either. Some of the Rosewill lines from Newegg are actually decent but As everyone in the know understands High end Corsair, Seasonic or EVGA will be a good investment. Having said that I have enjoyed the Thermaltake range of inexpensive are also pretty good. Personally I like my HX1200I more because I can monitor it in HWinfo64. So the I range or AX (I think is fully digital not needing the USB interface) but I am not sure if that is regulated to 1000W and above in that line.

Don’t know if anything has changed the last few months but The Corsair AXi line was not supported by HWiNFO64, only the HXi. Even though both are digital. Maybe because of usb? Can’t tell…
I have a HX750i and it’s great the monitoring ability.

It was years ago but I remember reading about the 1600AX in CPU Magazine (Remember that) and that where I read about the support as AX line 1200-1600 (at that time) was digital. I can only surmise that it must be the USB interface that allows HWinfo64 to read the data as it plugs into your MB header which I find HWinfo64 is great at reading. Like Gskill Royal RAM that is also supported by HWINFO64 but not AData D60G which may have the most alluring ARGB. Supposedly all DDR5 has monitoring support so it will be interesting to see IF I make the move to DDR5.

Good catch. I've seen single rank 16GB sticks in DDR4. No clue if they exist or if single rank 32GB sticks exist for DDR5? Either way 128GB is a lot of ram. Motherboard should support it, but may want to confirm. Sometimes you see the odd one that only supports 64GB.

I'm sure it will work, but not anywhere close to 6000+ people are seeing DDR5 at.

I just assembled a rig the other day with that in a Fractal Meshify 2 Compact. My only bitch so far is the (EPS12V?) cables that go up top on the mainboard, are cutting it damn close. Putting lots of strain on the wires, and I had to cut the corner instead of routing to the bottom back corner of the case and straight up. It sure seemed like the best bang for the buck on PCPartpicker - probably going to get them for the next two rigs as well. (CAD/CAM rigs at work)

That's a universal design so that no matter what case, PSU, mobo combination you have; the CPU power cable will just barely be able to reach CPU power connector.

They must be less flexible then. Last two PS I bought were Seasonic in Define R6 cases. Never noticed.

Go big, or go home :)

For newer, high-end builds with gen 11-13 cpu's & big GPU's, I am telling all of my clients to pony up for 1k-1.6k PSU's, so that they are ready for any future upgrades...

It's simply anutha case of "pay me now, or pay me later", as in pay the vendor for a bigger/betta psu now, or pay ME later to tear your rig down & replace a smaller unit with a bigger one
