IDE and SATA on the same board - boot problems

Hi there.

I recently replaced a failing hard drive with a 250GB SATA drive (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148261). I had an IDE storage drive in the system that works fine.

I have the OS installed on the SATA drive. For some reason, when I try to boot up the system with both drives plugged in, the system just "hangs" without loading any OS. Unplugging the IDE drive before bootup solves the problem. I tried setting up the BIOS to boot to the SATA only, etc..., but I haven't had any luck.

If anyone can offer suggestions, I would appreciate it!

What mobo are you using? On my Gigabyte the BIOS can be set to read sata as ide etc

Ok what was the HDD you took out - was it IDE or SATA?

I removed an IDE drive from my computer.

I formatted the new SATA drive and put Windows XP Home on it. Also, the other drive is strictly storage; there never has been an OS on it.

So obviously your computer is seeing the SATA. Check your IDE to make sure that the little selector pins are in MASTER/ONE DRIVE not SLAVE - normally a little black plastic plug.

Yes, I've tried many different jumper settings - it didn't have any effect, for some reason.

On the back of your IDE drive, how many selector pins are there (I mean the little black plugs)?

move your sata cable on the mobo to a different sata connection port. could be the ide 0 and sata 0 share the same channel.

Good call (didn't think of that :banghead: ) but I also think that it was his original boot drive that was replaced so unless the selector has been changed on his data data drive it won't be recognised.

Could also be a factor of which IDE header on the cable is plugged into the hdd and motherboard. Try setting your HDD to cable select. Use the one on the ends of the cable for the hdd and motherboard.

Problem has been solved. I switched the SATA port and everything is fine.

Thanks everyone!

Check your boot order in the bios. It could be that the bios is trying to boot from the storage drive first instead of the new drive and thus failing.

Problem has been solved. I switched the SATA port and everything is fine.

Sweet! Happy to see you got it going!
