Scenario:
-Trendnet router installed in house in 2nd floor office near exterior wall. wireless in house is fine, wireless is decent within about 300' of the house.

-Standalone building/shop with poor wireless on laptop and no wireless on iPad. Approximately 450' from the router in the house. I am looking to boost signal, repeat signal with in that building/shop.

I know nothing about networking (other than basic wireless router install stuff) and have read some confusing information.

Thanks

the pringles idea does actually work,if you have ddwrt you can also boost your tx power

I could run a buried cable drop yes... How about a wireless option? or am I shit outta luck?

heres a couple of pics of a GM that doubled my signal strength.
It goes on the antenna of the router or any antenna and give it directional abilities.

no it can be done with just a good router or adding a repeater.

any suggestions on which routers may have the greatest range?

does anyone know if the DSL company would allow you to install another modem on the same line? is that even possible?

Option 1: Repeater with cantenna
Lowest cost, and easiest solution. You won't get the best of speeds, but given what you're working with....

The idea is to concentrate the wireless signal into a cone, so that the effective range of the signal is higher. You'll need to allow looser timing on the router to account for extended distances. This solution works, but is less than elegant....

Option 2: Repeater and underground run
Highest labor, and medium cost. You'll run a wire from the current router's back to the garage. From here a repeater will allow you to cover the garage in a strong wireless signal.

This requires you to run wire, which isn't for everyone. Honestly, this is the best solution for both wireless speed and eventually upgrading the garage.

My choice would be option 2. The labor pays for itself by not being a ghetto mod.

Another modem....needs to be the same type of equipment they use, then should be fine, at least, it is with my DSL provider.

You're better off to to just use existing equipment and add a router of your own though, IMHO.

First I am going to move the modem/router to another room in the west part of the house.
Then if that doesn't work I may need to look further.
Although the limit for cat5e/cat6 cable is 100m (about 300ft)...
