Im trying to install an Intel CPU for the first time, but although i have applied the cpu correctly, i believe, but im not sure if im doing it right, so i thought i would ask befote continuing...

Once i try to pull down the arm to lock the cpu, it is proving to be very difficult... as in it is giving quite resistance to get it to place... What am i doing wrong here..? Any thoughts on this? I have attached files on how it looks before i continue...

it is scary the first time years ago, i thought the arm would bend and heard a crunch sound but it was fine.

as long as you have the 4 notches lined up (which looks good in your pics!) - it's pretty dummy proof.

Agree 100% with @looniam. It's a much greater effort with LGA versus AMD's socket.

Just make sure the board is on a solid, level surface and lock that 12700k in and get ready to rock. :rockout:

Just triple and quadruple check you have the CPU facing the correct direction. Then make sure the CPU is seated in the socket.

And never, as in NEVER EVER touch the pins or pads. Hold the CPU by the edges and make sure you touch bare metal of the case interior BEFORE reaching for the CPU, and frequently thereafter to discharge any static in your body and to keep it from building up again.

FTR, I think you are wise to be cautious and asking questions! :)

push it down CPU is in fine.

That is some upgrade from a Intel Core i5 6400 :) I went from a Ryzen 2600x to a 12700k and boy do you notice.

Ok, thanks for the pointers and tips, you all! :)

I went with some force and got it in place! Does it look right now maybe?

Ohh, before i forget it... Should i use the dot method or X method when applying thermal paste on the cpu..? Any thoughts on that?

I put a line down it from top to bottom, not too thick though

got a OT story about socket 7, a screwdriver and scotch tape. :fear:

a friend of mine, who was teaching me to build, dropped his phone laughing over why and what i did. fortunity nothing was harmed and learned what zero insertion force ment.

Ahh, a line it is then. Thanks. :)

I just saw some vids where some put the RAM sticks on every 2nd bracket, so i did it too, ad you can see... Does it make any difference, or should i have them on bracket 1 and 2 instead of 2 and 4? I have 2x16gb to put in place.

Check the motherboard manual, or even the board for placement (might be silkscreened near the slots). Most boards require them in the slots you've put them in as show in your photo.

Ok, placed it correctly. Now i wonder if i should place the Arctic Liquid Freezer ii 360 on the top of my FD Define R6 or in front... Any thoughts on that? Otherwise, it seems to be straight forward......i guess.

It doesn't really matter. you can have it on top with air blowing from case out of fans going up, or on the front with air coming in the front, through fans and into case. If it is on the front, pipes to the bottom. If the tubes are too short, mount it on the top.

besides the notches helping users orientate them correctly, there is also the arrows, the little triangles that align with each other too. Take note of the triangle in the corner of the IHS (the integrated heat spreader.....the metal part on the top of the CPU). There is also one on the green PCB, see the little triangle in the same corner as the one on the IHS? These triangles will align with a triangle on the socket as well. Since you have the CPU installed already you wont be able to see that one, just take note it exists. Intel (as well as AMD) have done their best in my opinion to make the installation "idiot proof". As in, making it very difficult for someone to put it orientated wrong using several keyed notches and visual indicators like those triangles.

LGA sockets have also the alignment notches so it's practically impossible to install it the wrong way unless you're brute-forcing it with some gorilla's strength.

Ok, so after son fiddling around, i got it in place, i believe...

However, which way should the tiny fan point? The way i have done it, as seen on the attachments, will align nicely with my FD Define R6 if i place the Arctic LF ii 360 on the top of the R6, but is this the optimal way to have the 360 or? If not, which way should it be? Yes, as you can see, i have not yet attached it to the mobo... It was just placed there to see if it was the best spot or not.

Otherwise, does it look okay on the backside of the mobo? The backplate should be correct, right?

Much appreciated that you lot are stepping in to guide me through this!

I'd put the fan up as well so it cools the VRM heatsinks a little; that's what it's meant for :)

Little fan up i guess, but in reality, any way, imo, as long as it's on. I'm guessing it is supposed to be fan up, though some 690 boards seem to have trouble with cooler fitting.
Did you get the LGA1700 kit?

It's little fan up (it's supposed to help cool the VRM's)

Ah ok, so i should keep it like i have on the attached photo then huh?

Yes, i did get the 1700 kit as well, which you can see on the backplate (that one was included in the lga 1700 kit).

Yeah, you're doing it right :)

Great! Then i will attach it and continue the work when i wake up. :)

Hehe, yes, the sticker is still on, but once i apply the thin thermal paste line, i will remember to remove it.

Be aware... Noob that i am, there might be more questions coming, but for now, i cannot thank you lot enough for advising and helping me through this! So sooo grateful!
