Is there truly any reason to upgrade from Vista Ultimate 64 to Windows 7 64 bit?

I personally like W7, but between Vista Ultimate and Win 7 Home or Pro, I do not see anything the warrants the cost. If you have something like MSDN or TechNet than it is worth the trouble of reformatting

No prob at all!! I passed my Vista license to my wifes computer and everytime I see it I can't deny it looks beautiful and stylish (and no bsod or whatever, of course, it is my build, haha)

Vista is like a luxery car, and 7 like a commuter )

Agree with others it's simply a waste to upgrade at the moment if you were building a new system then its logical to go with 7 but other than that Vista is capable of DX11 as well, there is hardly any difference between the two.

Nope, tested that myself. If Vista is optimized to use less resources it's practically equal to 7 (I have Vista on a laptop and 7 on the desktop).

You do realise that XP is appalling for gaming these days, right?

If you have 2GB RAM and a 1GB graphics card, you lose half of your RAM already because XP shadows everything from video RAM into main RAM. That leaves you with 1GB. Deduct a few hundred MB (say 700, because it CAN get that high these days) for the 3rd party programs and processes you have running, maybe 100MB for device drivers and say 150MB for the OS. That leaves you with a grand total of 74MB left to play your games with.

Now does upgrading to Vista or 7 seem all that pointless?

I bought win 7 to run a physx card. Turned out I got a counterfeit copy, looked just like the real thing btw all the way down to the holographic disc.

It did work till Microsoft shut it down. There were two things I loved about 7. # 1 was the snipping tool, it basically lets you highlight an area on the screen, clip it out and save it. Nice utility.

2nd was the folder organization. Sometimes I've got 6 or 7 windows folder and tons of browsers, 7 lets you hover over a single browser box, then you click the window of that type you want to open. Keeps things really tidy.

When Microsoft shut it down, I uninstalled and while I did love those two functions but not enough to buy another copy.

If it's optimised, you hit the nail on the head there, Vista is a bloated POS and from a clean install you have to download and install 2 service packs and tweak the shit out of it for it to be as responsive as 7, not only that 7 is more secure to boot, aero is more defined, the GUI is nicer, finding your way about is easier.

For Mr average Joe he wouldnt have a clue how to tweak Vista to get it running like it should, 7 is just snappy and fast out of the box.

7 is what Vista should have been but MS blew there load too quickly

I would switch to 7 if u have if for free and stay with Vista if you need to pay additional $$.
Sure you have to install those service packs in order to make it work as it should but thats about if for normal home use.

It is case by case. If one thing was bad in the Vista days was the absence of 64bit drivers for certain, a LOT of devices, but you should blame lazy manufacturers!
I remember a voicemodem, a scanner, and a Serial to USB converter that, contrary to promises and promises from the three manufacturers, never got the proper drivers!
On the other hand, I never had a single software problem with Vista. But it is just me of course!

It boils down to personal taste.I use Win7 and my dad uses Vista on his main desktop,He also has Win7 home on his laptop.He said to me the other night he wants to keep Vista on the main rig cause he hates the look of Win7 lol .I ran both up until i found my self in WIn7 more then Vista,You could dot he trial win7 and dual boot if you have the space then make up your own opinion.

I've read that many times here, but from my experience, I really can't see how can that be true...I mean , I have Win XP, 2GB RAM and a 1GB GPU and I run all my games at 1920x1200, on high settings, including Crysis and Metro 2033 just fine...if that was true, wouldn't my games run like crap? (I 'm not pretending to know better, just asking)

Mayas well keep Vista, even with my SSD's i have had 0 issue's as the intel chipset drivers (IRST) keep them going good. Not sure how it would work out if you had SSD's your self.
