Hey guys i'll get to the point,I'm not exactly a pro at hardware as back in the highschooldays so i'm a newbie but a quick learner at that;

I bought a new computer n got the shop i got it from (gamedude.com.au) to assemble it for me. it's been workin sweet, lately i hopped onto photoshop for some massive project, n thought i might need more ram. I bought the exact same ram as what was already in the motherboard -> 2 x 2Gig Kingston 800mhz. Problem is, i put the new ram in, and turned on the pc and the NEW ram isn't detecting :wtf:

Now:
1. i've read through the forums a bit and I read that depending on the system you have not all the ram may be detected! this tru? i'll outline my specifications below

2. I have no idea how to install ram software/bios wise, i thought this stuff was all plug n play!

3. My Ram was originally running in Dual Channell mode I assume and according to the book because my original 2 slots of 2 Gig kingstons were put in both the 1st GREEN Dimm slot and the 1st Orange Dimm Slot, Which apparently activates dual channell mode(?)

4. I came home, put the ram in the rest of the free slots, and no luck.

5. Help me out please any advise would be great, also please note that the system properties only describe 3.25 GB of ram n not 4 Gig. Now theres 8 Gigs sitting in the slots and i still have 3.25 Gig comin up!!! :S
Specifications:

Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU
Q6600 @ 2.40 GHz
2.40 Ghz, 3.25 GB of RAM

I start UNI monday I need this stuff workin lol!! danggg........

Windows XP will only address 3.5ish GB of ram...you need a 64bit Os to run over 4GB and have it utalized!

Could use 2X2GB and just drop the .5 as it is used by the PC as is, then send the other 2 sticks back.

I say if you are doing cad the 64bit Os may help as I know ram amount can be anissue there!

Also please go to userCP and fill out the system specs to the best of your ability, to help us help you.

As sneekypeet said, 32 bit Windows XP will only recognise about 3.5GB max ram, where as on a 64 bit OS it will recognize all 8 GB. If you do go to a 64 bit operating system I would recommend Vista 64 as the support for it and development for it is much better than Windows XP 64 bit.

Darn........

So i'm running a 32bit system? :S i thought i had a 64 lol i ordered the pc in a rush.it's only 2 months old. that dusn't make sense though.....it says in the manual that the motherboard supports up to 8 Gig ram, uh maybe i'm just confused thinking that the motherboard can only take 32bit processors and not 64.but i guess it can,

so to get this straight, thanks to my processor being 32bit, and my windows which i faithfully bought for real this time, i can't get my 8 gig of ram unless I upgrade to a 64bit processor?

Right click on my computer and select properties it will say on that main screen if its 32 or 64bit OS
And the CPU/Processor is fine to run a 64bit OS...It was an assumtion due to the symptoms of the 3.5GB of ram thing!

oh.......

oh ok.....wow u guys got back to me quick. thanks to u i might get my money back.... :toast: i'll reply on the post on any more updates

i think it's time for another upgrade.................. thanks again for tha support

there is the other option of keeping the ram and getting a copy of Vista64 ...I saw a few at like $100 in our for sale section...if you decide to take that route!

I'm 99% sure that all new processors are 64 bit, and I know for sure yours is, just that running a 64 bit OS isn't common, especially when bought through a retailer of sorts. So what you should do is pick up a 64 bit version of windows Vista if you can (cheapest they have on the site you got you pc from is $119) and install that.

Damn, beaten by peet.

right click on my computer in start menu or on your desktop if Icon is there.....then select properties...a window will show with vital system info.

Ok, I know what ur talkin bout now, yeh that's why i'm confused actually, cuz theres nothing in there that mentions 64 or 32 bit. My old pc did i remember. Shortcut Windowsbutton + Pause|Break gets me to that screen. i've listed all my system info on UserPC. and on the original post at the bottom is what is listed for Hardware info, however operating system info;

Microsoft Windows XP
Home Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 2

no 64 bit or 32 etc. :S

Everest, as long as you dont get the trial version, should show you damn near everything you could possibly need and some really!

lol the australian mirror from ur link u provided didn't work but the european mirror did. x) DUHHHHHHHHHHH i didn't even try it so i was out searching google lol. Thanks for this aye i think if i do definately have a 64 bit system which i thought i did........ i'll just go out n get xp or vista 64 bit so i can get this ram workin. ;D

The system is 64 bit compatable...its just if your OS really is or not.

If you find it is in fact a 64bit Os (which it didnt sound like previously), there could be other issues, but we will cross that bridge when we get there!

ok my friend i ran Everest (damn i love it!) and the OS Kernel Type as shown in ur image u provided IS IN FACT 32!! That makes me happy cuz hopefully now we don't have to cross that bridge u just mentioned! so now, would u reccommend 64bit XP or VISTA 64 bit?
