hi, getting my two new HDDs by this week. i am unable to use the Western Digital CD Software as when i created the CD after downloading the Image File i tried to boot it and it says error IDE Drive or cable may not be plugged in and some other crap. i have searched but couldn't find any trusted Apps. to do this. i would like to be able to transfer my OS Partition to one of my new HDDS so i don't have to reinstall my OS. current HDD are IDE but i was afraid since these new ones are SATA i couldn't do this. anyone know any good Freeware Apps?

Norton Ghost is about the best.....seems to be very consistent and reliable....I use it very often ...maybe 3-5 times a week since 2001ish....there are others though.

I've switched from using Norton Ghost to Acronis a year or two ago, both work very well. If it came down between the two I'd go with whichever you can find cheaper.... or free.

Edit: I don't think I've used Ghost when cloning an IDE to a SATA drive, but Acronis didn't care one bit. You should have no prob. either with Ghost.

Acronis 11 is pretty good. I use it almost everyday

You can partition hard drives using the disc manager in windows too.

The best (free) I know of is GParted.

I just use Windows. Norton Ghost allows you to partition a drive? Never used it though. Not sure if you confused it with Partition Manager. PM8 doesnt support Vista.

Edit: Nvm. I misread the post. :banghead:

i've read some stuff and if i'm correct the Back Up Feature for Vista just creates an Image of the actual DATA you back up and not a Actual Folder/Files and the OS itself.

Definately acronis true image, im another that uses it on a daily basis, however it isnt freeware :(

Another +1 for Acronis. I use Disk Director for partition management, changing size, cloning, formating new drives, etc. It has a boot from CD option too.
