Looking For Single Player Games To Use With Controller

Hello!

I've become quite bored of BF4 and GTA V lately, and I just feel like relaxing in bed with a wireless controller and playing some single player games, as I don't have a console.

What would be your recommendations? I guess I'm not really into Sci-Fi stuff, but I do like games with a decent story and some nice visuals. I get bored quite quickly of games where you just kill endless amounts of enemies for no real reason, games are much better with a really immersive plot.

It's a shame The Last Of Us isn't on PC, as that would be perfect! I've played Tomb Raider which was okay, and Skyrim is decent with a controller but it's just a bit slow paced for me.

Valkyria Chronicles is the first game to come to my mind. Not the best plot and art but the gameplay is a lot of fun. It's a turn-based strategy shooter. Game gives you time to aim your shots so works fantastic with a controller.

I prefer single player games with a story over battling it out(in more ways than one...)playing online multiplayer titles. Although being a lefty...controllers haven't always agreed with me. I'm trying to get used to the Steam controller, but that's another topic for another thread.....

Jboyd pretty much covered what first popped in to my mind....which was the Bioshock remastered titles(and perhaps Bioshock: Infnity) and racing car games. I prefer the Need for Speed titles vs. GRID, so I'd probably recommend any of those NFS titles. Beyond that...perhaps the Mass Effect, Batman, or Hitman titles might be worth a look.

With that said, I'll throw a few older oddball titles that are personal favorites into the ring that might otherwise be overlooked due to age, but are worthy of a closer look because of the very fact that they are indeed...single player titles that work with a controller. They're probably pretty cheap too..... On a Steam sale....probably practically free.....

If you're into platformers something like Hollow Knight , a metroidvania type of game plus the artwork and music is nice.

Mad Max - Hated by many, but is honestly one of the few action fighting games where the combat and controls were fluid and worked. The same can't be said for the Batman games and the like. Great graphics and atmosphere, but not perfect.

Sleeping Dogs - A bit more rough than Mad Max but overall the controls aren't too bad. Very fun game, nice story and setting. Far better than the crap that is GTA. Think of it as GTA done right but based on good fighting mechanics.

Just Cause 3 - In a lot of ways inferior to Just Cause 2, but also better in some ways. Otherwise very fun game with a nice map to drive/fly around. Combat is fun enough. I'd say it was a highlight of last year for myself. One tip of advice, block the .exe from going online via Windows firewall. Otherwise the game will pause every 20-30 minutes and try to re-connect so you can display your score for others. Dumbest thing I've ever heard, but blocking the .exe is simple enough.

I will not recommend Dues Ex Human Revolution / Mankind Divided. Why? They often require fine aiming mechanics especially if you want to be stealthy. So I would much prefer to use a mouse and keyboard.

Most recent game for me that i played with controller on PC is Nier Automata,weird and interesting story/lore if you dive into it, DMC/Bayonetta combat style since its platinum games.
A 30+ hour game if you aim for all 15 endings and side quests.

Although be wary the game isn't optimised but recent drivers appear to have fixed the crashes the game has.

Upcoming game that is similar to Soul series with mixture of Ninja Gaiden fast pace is Nioh.

Bioshock Series (preference for 1 and 3)
Borderlands Series (light on story, but good with a controller)
Shovel Knight (retro arcade, lighter on story but a good game)
Enter the Gungeon (0 story, but some fun bullet hell)
Rogue Legacy (light on story, but good on gameplay)
Braid/Limbo (story for both is light, but they're a good afternoon)
Witcher 2/3 (skip the first, and maybe the second)


On the punishing side:
Super Meatboy
Binding of Isaac

On the long side:
Darksiders (1 and 2 are only tangentially linked, and 1 still has huge PC port bugs)
Dishonored (1 is great, 2 not as much)
Transformers (War for Cybertron and Fall of Cybertron for a story, Devastation for grind, and avoid most other things)

But the quality of the game is certainly like a roller coaster, lots of ups and some big downs. Particularly, the entire Part B section of the game is fairly pointless.

Just about everything can use a controller now. It's almost easier to name games that don't. Like Isometric RPGs (Shadowrun, Pillars of Eternity).. But even Divinity Original Sin 1 and 2 can use a controller too.

I actually had a list of to play games on my steam link(with a controller) so I'll just share the games that I will play or have played that I remember. I did quite google a bit to find games for controllers that interested me

Splinter Cell: Blacklist, Mad Max, Hitman, MGS: V Phantom Pain, Quantum Break, Batman Arkham series, FarCry series(it's fun on controller too), Just Cause, Sleeping Dogs, GTA V, Tomb Raider 2013 and the sequel, Tekken, Cuphead, Nier: Automata, Dark Souls, The Witcher 3, Middle Earth, Dishonored, Bioshock

The Witcher 3, its really quite simple

Some older alternatives I would really not want to have missed:

- Dead Space (start with 1, sci fi horror survival shooter, but 100% brilliant also story wise)
- Grab PCSX2 emulator and a PS2 library and pick whatever

If you're into solving puzzles without the violence, check out Quern. It resembles the Myst series of games. I started playing it a week ago and it's quite addictive and stimulating for the mind. It was on sale when I bought it on Steam.

My vote goes towards Hellblade. The Witcher 3 is pretty awesome too!
