Making Crossfire Work and Optimization

to be honest, you need to narrow it down. Try other PSU's, try the video cards in another machine, try another operating system/fresh install.

Hmm ok - the cards do work in an amd based machine, and I"ve tried the psu from that one in the intel machine with no luck. I'll try a fresh install. Is a 680W psu normally sufficient?

thanks
rob

wattage of a PSU may as well be achieved by hitting a calcuator with your eyes closed, it means nothing at all. amperage on the 12V rail is what matters.

My old OCZ 600W had four 12 volt rails at 18A - i saw a thread where someone had a HEC 585W, and it had two 18A rails. how can a PSU with 15W less, have half the power where modern PC's draw most of their current? because crappy manufacturers use every loophole possible to fake the wattage numbers.

I have the system of the specs and tomorrow my 4850 i gig arrives so i was wondering, being written in my mobos manual, should i connect the 2 floppy connectors above every pcie slot for extra stability or is it mostly decorative?
Cos if i have i have to start soldering a floppy on a 4pin connector...(i d never put a bigmodular cable of 4*4pins+a floppy just for the floppy:cool::cool:)

Just tried to download the manual for your board but it crashed my browser, LOL However, if thats what they recommend then I'd be inclined to use them. Seems stupid of DFI to use two floppy connectors on a modern board, I believe my PCP&C only has one connector.

Help with quad fire!

Hello and thanks for any help in advance:)
im very new to crossfire (this is my first cf build) I have read this entire thred and have tryed all of the provided info but still cant get it to run proper:banghead:
The divice manager shows all four GPU's, CCC shows onley one 4870x2 under system info the pry display device shows enabled all other displayes show disabled?
3dmark gives me 6402:wtf:, with onley one card installed i get 17652, i am definetley missing somthing (mostley between the ears lol) Please can someone help:)

Fill in your system specs.

sorry, i just did, i missed the tes pulldown

Cheers. So in CCC, in the overdrive tab at the top it shows your primary card...is there a arrow at the end i.e a dropdown box? Silly question, but have you ticked the crossfire box in the Crossfire X tab?

Thankyou, yes the dropdown tab is there and it onley showes one card, and yes i have ticked the crossfire box in the Crossfire X tab
p.s. there are no silly questions onley silly ansers lol.

Had a look at CCC again, in that Overdrive panel there are two dropdowns on mine, one says "Graphics Adapter" and the one beneath says "GPU to configure". Do you have both?

This is strange, as you have the CrossfireX tab...

The way I set mine up (last week so I just about remember!) (and I'm using single 4870s) was with one card in, remove all ati software. Shut down, install second card without bridge. Start up and let Vista install device drivers (presumeably standard Windows VGA). Reboot, install Cat 9.6, shut down. Install bridge, startup, done. All worked fine, see if you can do the same.

Thats all I can think of....

They usually arent needed. they're more of a backup for when the PCI-E power plugs cant provide enough power, on shitty PSUs. Plug em in if you intend to OC the cards :)

Various problems

X38 should have no problems. Check to see if there is a BIOS update for your motherboard and video cards - most of the time when we see issues like this, its BIOS related, or a faulty crossfire bridge.

yes i do have both dropdowns, and also gpuz showes all four gpus but states that one card is disabled? i have tryed cat 9.1 and 9.6 with the same results, crossfire tab also only shows one card on syncmaster (that is my monitor i think?) i also canot get any vidio signal unless i plug my monitor into the second card is this normal?

Hate to tell you, but both x64 and x86 XP don't support more than 2 gpus. You'll have to move to Vista or wait for 7 to use more.

oh crap, i didnt even notice he was on XP!
good catch mastrdrver.

XP does NOT support quad SLI or quad crossfire as he has said.

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahha!!!!no foolin xp x64 only two gpu support, is there a patch or must i run vista, well thank you very much masterdrver i do have vista ulti 64 so i will install and report back later, thanks to all who replyed to me i have enjoyed this forum and will continue to imput my findings hear tks to all and have a good day .

yeah you'll need to go to vista or 7, i highly suggest 64 bit.

ill be back after i install vista tks again man you are the best.
BROWNIE.

one last question, which card will i plug my monitor into the only way i get a vid signalnow is if i plug into the second card? is this the norm?
sory for doubblepost

Plug it into the card that is in the slot closest to the cpu. It is recommended that, if you have 2 dvi outputs, to use the one on the left when looking from the top of the case down on the back panel. But, I used the one on the right for several years without problems. Didn't realize it until I had a fight with the code 43 error.

you are thanked manytimes over my friend, see ya in a coupple of hours after install and updates.

No problem hyper, I never knew the fun world of problems that existed outside of XP until I moved to Vista. Man that sucked!

Thanks for the advice.
Well it says that the floppy connectors are intented for extra stability, and since i ll v mod the 2nd card too,i think i ll put them in!!!
Thats why i spent the entire afternoon creating a double floppy connector!
What do u think? Its the best my hands could make out of my original psu and a part of a crapy one plus some heatshrink...

Whoot:D all is well with vista, with a fresh install and following
Dr. Spankenstein's directions the install was flawless:respect:
my first 3dmark06 score was 17202 and my vantage score was 14360 i think thay sound low so its time to start cranking things up, i know i can run stable @3.6htz on the cpu and 1600 on the ram so i will test it and report my findings:D
thanks to all that helped now have one on me:toast:

WOW man!2 4870x2 and only 17k and 14k???
U are SOOO CPU limited. These cards should hung out with a i7@4GHz at least...
But i feel for u cos i am cpu limited too...My poor 6300 cant break the 3,5 barrier stable...:(
I only get 16k 2k6 and 10k vantage...

I think I remember hitting somewhere near 14k with the i7 @ 3.8 and my HD4850 :D No CF there.
