I'm almost tempted to buy these just to see what "audiophile grade" is all about. I'm currently using some cheapo (but well regarded for the price range) $50.00 Phillips headphones with a also cheapo but well regarded DAC amp of Chinese build.

It's in my specs under "speakers." You can google the DAC. I was wondering if it can drive this?

AKG K7XX are easier to drive than other AKG headphones too.

I actually don't listen to much music, just want something halfway decent for gaming and a new toy honestly... I recently unlocked a wallet containing two whole bitcoins that I thought I had lost forever, so it's already burning a hole in my pocket.

Ugggh. I already have a K533 Pro, HD 280 Pro and I just ordered the Sennheiser HD518s that @Mindweaver posted.
Hmm. I think $200 is slightly out of my headphones-on-a-whim budget. Looking at frequency response graphs, I don't see too much difference between what I have and something like this (basically a K702, right?).

Actually, my K533 Pros (slightly tweaked and improved K550, closest thing they had) appear to be better in terms of frequency response. I think the 518s are going to become my new favorites for movies with explosions. The K702s seem a little more balanced than others, but not $200 balanced.

the 7XX is an open back design so the tonality, bass response, soundstage and the way it images are going to be different than the AKG K553 Pro. it's probably not worth it in your situation but if you had to do it all over again the 7XX might be a better choice for you.

I think the HD600 does certain things better than headphones that cost $1000+

save your pennies for a HD6XX instead. I keep reading the price drops to $250 once or twice a year so if you're interested you might want to look into that

I'd be tempted if I could manage to run open backs in my home...though I'd have likely kept my HE-400's.

I love my K553 Pros though...for what unpaid on massdrop nor sure what closed back could compete. Though I stopped looking after buying them. The Oppo PM3s were good...just not $400 good.

If you didn't have the HE's I'd be more tempted to recommend them to you...and while the K7xx get rave reviews and increased bass, they won't match the accuracy, bass, speed or separation of the HE400's. You could buy em, and if you like em, keep em...or sell em if you don't. They will be comfy I'm sure...and they will sound good, but I don't think they'll sound any better than what you have...honestly I feel you'd have to spend a helluva lot more than $2-3-400 to beat those HE-400's IMHO.

I don't care... not why I bought them... I got mine yesterday. They have a strangely weak treble section that I believe will improve with burn in (if not I'll be returning them to make sure it's right, as no one else has really reported this. It does seem to be getting better with time). Other than that they are great, best headphones I have owned (though that's not saying much). Once they have about a month of listen time and burn in is done, I will post a full review.

Also, the Schiit Magni 2 I bought does a FAR better job at driving the bass than my SMSL did. The SMSL's now just a DAC in my lineup.

Oh, and I think they made at least 2000 units. Because I got unit #1787
