ATI/AMD use HyperZ... not that it doesn't do anything at all.

Hierarchical Z culling is nothing new, it has been in use since Radeon 7500 series and GeForce 4 (NVIDIA used Z buffer compression only on GeForce 3 as far as I can see from architecture specs). Voodoo 5 had it in some experimental driver and it was super aggressive back in the day, but 3dfx went bust soon so we've never seen the finished drivers...
