PS3 now offers a premium service, but I have not bought it. I'm not sure what extras you now get with it. I've thought about ordering the hulu service for it tho.

I do own a 360, but I don't have the online service turned on for it. I don't know why I would pay for it tho honestly. I have yet to ever hear a good reason why I should order it.

The PS3 online is pretty much good enough for me, if i owned a 360 i definitely wouldn't be paying $60 for the online service. But that's because i think it's to much for the things i want to do online(which the PS3 online does the things i want for free anyways).

I own both a PS3 and an Xbox360. I never play online on the PS3. The experience is terrible. But I pay for Live. It's just simply better.
That being said, this is just in time for Halo Reach, which is probably going to end up being the most played xbox live game of all time... pure money grab.
Then again what is being said is true... they've added WAY more since the original xbox live and that was the same price... that coupled with inflation, blah blah... Still a pretty damn good deal. Oh well... I'll still pay it, and I'll probably like it.

This is actually a pretty good idea on Microsoft's part. People will bitch. Halo players will scream bloody murder. Then they'll all renew like good little consumers when their time is up. Since there is no other practical way to play 360 games online, they can almost charge whatever they want.

That said, though, if you're willing to hunt for it, you can usually find subscription codes online for cheaper than the $50 now and you'll likely still be able to do so when it goes to $60.

Besides those, Xbox Live is just generally a better online service. And this is coming from someone who owns a PS3.

I have to disagree. But then again I generally don't care about all the extra bloat that a Gold Membership gives. No one will ever convince me that I should pay to play games online when the same service is free everywhere else, that at the very minimum should be free.

All the extra features, fine charge for them, but actually playing multiplayer games online should be free.

It's a fact that Xbox Live is generally considered the better online service by the majority, but that's of course due to the extra stuff as you mentioned. And im in the same boat in terms of not wanting the extra crap that comes with the gold membership.(which is the reason to why i stick to the PS3's free online, because it does what i want it to do.. which is to play games online. lol)

I just watched this over the new PS3 paid service. Which is also 60 a year.

It does extend your warranty an extra 3 years from what you already have. That's kind of kool. Also you can save all your games online instead of on your HDD. ALSO you can play any PS3 game for free for an hour??????

Some of the other crap is, why isn't it just free.....

I know tho that MS, and SONY pay $$$ for severs.

But as CD says, I think online gaming should be free. I don't think I should have to buy a service to buy another service like Netflix or Hulu(is that on 360), but I don't know if it's just free with the service on 360(I bet not tho).

What's so hard about using the browser to run music or check out ESPN? Pretty sure the PS3 is Netflix capable as well. I'll keep the money in my pocket, thanks.

Lets not spread misinformation- right now PSN+ is 49.99/yr, you get a discount on the extended warranty, and certain titles have full game trials.

I am pretty sure that like PSN a lot of LIVE games use P2P and not dedicated servers, so aside from features I'm not sure how paying is going to make actual online play any better. The other thing I hated about LIVE when I was using it was the constant bombarding of ADs everywhere, whether you are Gold or Silver you were getting spammed :(

PS3 is fully Netflix compatible. You just put in the Netflix DVD and of ya go and you dont have to login like ya would with MP games or to use the browser..

That's why i asked if you would have to pay the $60 a month to be able to use the Netflix DVD with a xbox 360.

This is awesome, prices going up in the US, Canada, Mexico and the UK, but not Ireland, for once :rockout: Other than the US, it's only the 1 month price that has gone up in the other countries, which is more expensive than a 3 month or year subscription anyway.

Besides, it's like €60 for a year here, but if you shop online you can buy the 12+1 Month for €45, and that works out at €3.46 a month.

There's no point complaining about paying for Xbox Live. If you don't want it, don't pay for it. It's not expensive, if you can afford a console, games and a HDTV you can afford less than €3.50 a month.

I hope you were joking here and really do know that when we are talking about Netflix we are talking about the ability to stream movies instantly from the Netflix service.

I think you misunderstood him NT1, when using the Netflix service with PS3 you have to put in the Netflix Streaming Disc which then launches the program and gives you access to the streaming collection.

Like he said, you do not have to login to PSN to launch the Netflix Disc either (at least not that I remember when I was using it). All you do is register your PS3 via Netflix.com

Its not built into the firmware like the X360 (I believe that has to do with an exclusivity period with X360), but it will be later this year I think.

He's definitely not talking about putting in a DVD from the mail and watching it

I don't think you need the nexflx disc anymore for PS3. I see the add on PSN like I could just click on it, and it will work all the time. I have not had the funds to try it tho so I don't know that for sure.

I think the wii needs the disc tho.

I'm not happy about the price increase as I don't really use many of the features MS is touting as making the extra money worth it. I wish the Zune Marketplace wasn't such joke and they actually had some selection. The gold subscription price already seemed like a rip-off. Their greed never ceases to amaze me.

Its not built into the firmware like the X360 (I believe that has to do with an exclusivity period with X360), but it will be later this year I think.

It's actually a stand alone application that has to be downloaded and not part of the firmware. If you look through the HD contents you can see the Netflix application there. But maybe that's not what you meant.

All the extra features, fine charge for them, but actually playing multiplayer games online should be free.

This reminds me of something DaedalusHelios said that Tom Petty said (that I am now saying was said), "As we celebrate mediocrity all the boys upstairs want to see, how much you'll pay for what you used to get for free".

When I used the service a couple months ago it still needed the disc. Netflix's website says you still need the disc, but like I mentioned, Netflix has said it should be built into the XMB in a firmware update during the fall before the end of the year. I no longer have access to the service, but I am pretty sure the disc is still needed.

It's actually a stand alone application that has to be downloaded and not part of the firmware. If you look through the HD contents you can see the Netflix application there. But maybe that's not what you meant.

Poor wording on my part. I was merely saying that the XBOX does not require a disc to be in the drive like the PS3 does.

hmmmm what really MS provide to justify the increased cost ? they even don't have dedicated server,

what a rip off, glad i'm PC gamer, we have dedicated for free. not just P2P system where the online experience can be crap.

I don't have a 360, or any current generation consoles for that matter, but I do know a little something about deals.

Most of my friend's with 360s have been able to pick up year subscriptions to gold for $20-$25 a year. It's just a matter of keeping a good lookout.

This. I never pay more than £30 for my yearly sub to LIVE (usually £26 from ebay). I hate paying for online play, but XBOX LIVE is superior to PSN :(

I heard that the UK price for LIVE isnt increasing, is this correct?

Better be increasing, i'm trying to persuade my little brother to go outside and experience this thing called "life" and more importantly "sunlight".
If he can't pay for it from his measly 8 hours of work a week, then he'll have to find something else to do with his more than ample free time.
