Microsoft seems to be on the verge of introducing a new file recovery tool in a future Windows 10 update. The news, courtesy of The verge, paints a MS-DOS-based tool that would allow users to recover most of the "basic" files they'd be looking for after accidental deletion: MP3 files, MP4 videos, PDFs, JPEG images, and Office, Word as well as PowerPoint documents. The File Recovery Tool is already available as a download from Microsoft's app store (and requires Windows 10 version 19041.0 or higher).

The lack of a GUI could be a put-off for some users; but again, this is a free tool from the company. As a refresher, a file isn't fully deleted if you only use Windows' "delete" function - even if you delete it from the Recycle Bin afterwards. All that does is tell the OS that that those particular storage addresses are available for being written to again - the bits that the file is made of are still there. This is the reason why successful file recovery depends mostly on whether or not new information has been written to those particular cells again. If it has, chances to recover your data are slim.

It's already up on the Microsoft Store.

It's a command line program Microsoft wrapped up in UWP for download on the store.

Sweet. When we will get a built-in shredder? macOS have one for a long time.

It pays to read the entire article.

I was reading through the article here on the forums until I clicked over to the TPU article on the homepage.

It's may be a minor nitpick, but it's NOT MS-DOS based. Nothing is anymore. Dos has been dead since Win9x unless using bootable media. It's cmd based.

Thanks for that, because when i just read above “ms-dos based” I was like, Wtfo_O

Does shred -vu in bash for windows properly zero out the file? That's the first thing that comes to mind, but perhaps only because I make just as much of bash in Win10 as I do powershell. Surely there's powershell way of doing it too, just not sure how elegant it may be.

MS to introduce a file recovery tool, so when it screws up your system in an update you can use it to recover your lost files.
But an update to that re-deletes your files (:

Hi,
Seem linux on usb would still be better without file type limitations.
Surprised by this ms has a linux version now why the cheesy app store tool ?

Or recovers them behind your back? This might seem paranoid, but think about it, why else would MS create such a tool and then not give it a GUI(effectively making it generally inaccessible to the public)? This seems iffy.

Very iffy

Also what about anti virus software ...hmmmm..

Thank you MS for spying on us and changing program defaults and auto updating behind our backs. I sleep better knowing that you are benevolently protecting us. Ps the keys to my house are under the doormat, and My bank account number is stored in your telemetry data. And the cash is in the biscuit tin. Thank you.

Now that I think about it, where's the EU on all of this? Their currently cool so long as EU telemetry data is kept in the EU (GRDP)?

The tool is crap. It has limited options and cannot even specify which file(s) you want to keep or to recover...

I guess the </s> is a bit overdue?

Some people missed it I think, yes.

I actually work security and I've seen real shit. None of it came from Microsoft.

I take issue with some of their privacy policies, yes, but this thread is full of just blatant and stupid paranoia.

Yes, it is. And it's quite funny! :D That's why I just couldn't resist and jumped in.

Just because someone is paranoid, it doesn't mean people aren't after them. ;)

It also doesn't mean your antivirus and firewall/undelete tool is after you. Defer to those who actually work the field here, man.

I'm sure someone wants you for some reason, if it's any consolation.

My woman does, and that's all that matters. ;)
