Hey, the 1900gt uses the same r580 gpu as the 1900xt...hmmmmmmm. Ya think the gt an be flashed with the xt bios, or is it the same, just with higher default gpu and mem clocks?

The GT is called the R570 and some early versions could be flashed, but none of the ones out now can be. There's a thread about this already, look it up for more info.

Actually the GT as well as the XT use the R580 core. The 1950 Pro uses the R(V)570 core.

You are both wrong unfortuneately... The X1900GT and X1950PRO use the RV570 while the X1900XT uses the R580 :shadedshun
OMG The X1900GT is R580 for sure :respect: (At lease the revision 1 is certainly R580)
The RV570 is used on X1950Pro and X1950GT

So here's my $.02 on this.

Guy's looking for something midrange, which probably means he's got equally midrange parts on the rest of his machine. Guess what? That probably means 17 or 19" LCD screen which has a max resolution of 1280x1024. Guess what? Every single of these cards mentioned in this thread would probably max out a probably equally midrange CPU ... granted the ATI's IQ is far superior, but that's been a knock on Nv since day 1. ATI's cards have always had better IQ than Nv.

Given that, to futureproof yourself, if I were to make a decision on a sub-$200 video card, it would probbly be the X1950Pro. Second choice would be the 7900GT (and yes, they have now come down to this price point, just barely but they are there) ... either of these cards will provide an excellent gaming experience at 1600x1200 or 1680x1050 resolutions that next 20" or 22" widescreen LCD will give you.

I missed out on the $135 sale of the x1900gt (sold out). I wasn't on the ball I guess. It was also rev.2 which is clocked slower. The rev.1 cards are all open box.

I'm looking seriously at the XFX 7900GS for $130 AR.
I'm also looking at the Saphire X1950PRO 512MB HDCP for $190 AR. I know it's out of my stated price range but I don't know how much detail I can get from the 256MB card @1680x1050.

Ive yet to install Oblivion on my new box, but everything else Ive thrown at my 256 meg 7900GS has been able to run 1600x1200 with all the details turned up with very little problems. Going to be interesting to see how Oblivion runs now, last time I tried to run it was on a A64 3000 with an x800 ... didnt play bad, but I certainly could not crank it up like its meant to be played.

I read over at NewEgg that Oblivion really needs 512MB to run high detail at high resolution.

I struggled with a highly overclocked 7900GT to get acceptable frames outdoors on max everything at 1280 x 1024, my 1800XT 256MB afterwards just managed it and now my 7900GTO easily manages it at 1680 x 1200 :D

Johnny, I still maintain that within your origional price range you will be more than happy with the 7900GS, overclock it to death, it will be more or less as quick as the 1950Pro and you will save a few $$$$$$ also, if you can go that bit extra, pick up the 1950Pro (because overall its a better package with better IQ and you can run HDR and AA simultaneously) but there is no need for the 512MB in particular unless you intend to game in resolutions ABOVE 1280 x 1024 where the extra memory starts to benefit more.

As I have said I will be running at 1680x1050. The 250MB version is only $20 less.

OK, to keep it brief, the stock fan blows the hot air from the fins, the idea is that you have a 1200MM extractor case fan to suck the hot aor out, put another 80mm fan opposite to the stock on "suck", it clears the hot air from the fins quicker and throws it into the extractor quicker and more efficiently, its good for 5C idle temps and 7-8C at load, I posted a pic somewhere because I have been asked so many times bit cant find it

It's a great cheap and simple addition.

I have this mod aswell

it works and took about 3 degrees off my cpus temps however if I turn the fan on the rear up to high it does slow the front Ac/12 fan down by about 200 rpms so you kinda need a fan controller to regulate the rear fan so it doesn't effect the front fan.
