I'm looking for a pcie card for a new system; the price limit being $150 to $175. I wan't the best bang for the buck. I'm willing to do soft mods to unlock pipes and shaders, and OC if needed, to increase performance. I am partial to ATI but NV isn't out of the question.

Input anybody?

X1950pro is 200 But you could get a x1650XT for that price. Which isn't a bad card.

7600gt is dirt cheap now, depends if youre getting sli/crossfire really though, but if 1950pro is 200 id recommend saving $25 extra for that, its worth it in the long run

Can the x1950pro be softmodded to get the other four pipes and 12 pixel shaders?

No but its faster than the X1800XT and the X1900GT. Right now on newegg you can get a x1900XT for $199.99.

If your max is $150, theegg has a X1650XT for $139, 24 pipelines already installed, only downside is the 128 bit memroy interface.

Need to get this right.
Its 8 pipelines with 24 pixel shaders :p

Or you can wait for the X1950GT, since they are already selling them in China.

If you're looking up from there, the 7900GT is just under 200, has 24 TRUE pipelines, 256 bit bus and probably would be my next choice. Next chioce would be 7900GS or x1950Pro. Regardless, any of the cards right at the $200 limit are going be superb performers for all but the most demanding gamers. If you're not planning on gaming at anything over 1600x1200 these will all perform great.

He is running an XP machine, no PCI-E. The best cards are going to be the X1950 PRO AGP, Geforce 7800GS AGP, X850 XT/pro.

Ah, my bad, I didn't read that part. In that case, I still stand with the X1950 Pro.

X1650XT, X1950GT or X1950PRO. These cards all got dongle-less Crossfire and can do physics. I wouldn't touch the 7900GS with a 10 foot pole because its such a lackluster product in terms of performance with newer rendering methods.

7600GT would get blown out of the water by the X1650XT without a sweat.
X1950GT would murder the 7900GS (which it wasn't even designed to be better than), the X1950PRO would tear the 7900GT and in some cases even the 7950GT, undoubtedly also be more powerful than the 7800GT/GTX.

First of all, as far as I know ATi never said their X1K series to be what they are mistaken to be.:p
It is always the 1:3 ratio till this day.
It is the manufacturers that send out faulty message to boost sales.

I can't even find which one actually did that LOL.
At least Sapphire, Gigabyte, Asus, and HIS did not.

Don't mind him... he's one of those people who've gone senile over Nvidia > ATI

The new Bang-for-Buck champion will be the X1950GT, the chinese manufacturers are doing all they can to make the size of the card smaller, like solid capacitors rather than Rubycon, full restructuring of the PCB etc, using the Nvidia "No Ramsinks needed" style, effectively cutting down the cost. OR using the older types of capacitors.

Taiwan is the main producer

IMHO, this one would be one of the cheapest versions of the X1950GT

They live in taiwan so it would be cheaper to use Hynix :D.

All because of that type of placement of the capacitors, half the PCB is bare.

http://article.pchome.net/174030.html?148 : original article

Its about time we saw newer manufacturers make dirt cheap, highrange products.

The X1950GT, custom, since ATI gave many manufacturers kits to make custom PCBs, etc.

I Agree with this post %100.

tkpenalty "X1950GT would murder the 7900GS (which it wasn't even designed to be better than)"

This is BS I own both a X1900XT and a 7900GS@525/1550 and the GS hangs with my XT in some stuff and my XT would blow away a X1950Pro.

With your budget the 7900GS is the way to go.
