Mozilla is so frantically inflating Firefox version numbers, that its latest alpha (Aurora) build is already at version 7, less than a month after Firefox 5 final was released. Mozilla is playing catch-up with Google Chrome and Internet Explorer in the version number game. While informed users might find this silly, perhaps there is some data motivating Mozilla to inflate its version numbers, other than the fact that Google Chrome has already grabbed 20% of the browser market share, discretely updates itself, doesn't brag too much about version numbers; and the fact that Internet Explorer is back in the race with version 9 that greatly improved performance and features.

In any case, Firefox 7 is said to bring with it some new features, including faster startup time, better rendering performance, and more importantly, lower memory footprint. It also features better font rendering when GPU acceleration is enabled. An improved Sync manager syncs bookmarks and passwords instantly with your other devices. Firefox 7 Aurora (alpha, 7.0a2) can be downloaded in a wide range of languages, and for Windows, Mac, and Linux, from this page. Aurora builds can be unstable and buggy.

Bah, still slow as FF4.

Those version numbers are ridiculous!!!
Thank you Google :D

I hope they'll fix the retarded choppy scrolling when HW acceleration is enabled. This thing is suppose to enhance performance, but instead it makes it worse than on my Aspire One without any HW acceleration.

Nothing like a constructive post. IE is where it is because Mozilla pushed MS to improve it.
I agree that FF has some performance issues nowday's but lets be loyal for a while and see how it plays out.

They should just go ahead and call it Firefox 10.

Wheres FF6? Crazy numbering scheme...

Pfff... Always faithful to Opera... no half baked H/W accelerations a great community support. They are cooking new updates and versions builds like champs. :toast:

STOP WITH THE INFLATED VERSION NUMBERS!

Seriously, just call v6 5.1 and v7 5.2.

DAMN YOU, GOOGLE!

They're all going to feel silly when they have to announce the release of version 20. By then they'll have figured out too late how ridiculous it sounds announcing high level double or triple) digit versions. That's why updates are normally done in the decimals.

I'm still running the 3.6.18 version.
It's just a new update plan Mozilla has, to release a new major version every 3 months. The idea is to have Firefox 7 by the end of the year.
It's still silly and a bit childish, but I couldn't care less. As long as there are real improvements and plug-in compatibility, I'll continue to update.

Mozilla, just carry on as you were. We all loved you already and you were never far behind.

I don't need big numbers to make me download something just like I do need a shitty marketing strategy to put me off a good product.

Can't...Apple no doubt owns the number 10 and all the points after it. Theres even an urban legend where Steve Jobs went back in time to ancient Rome and bought the roman numeral X. He then went to the age of exploration and introduced an iPhone app for converting all pirate treasure markers to the infamous X. Pirates don't understand the concept of microtransaction or royalties so not missing a gold coin here or there really doesn't concern them as much as sea monsters and women sailors :D.

...yes, I had nothing better to do than to think up some ridiculous story like that.

Hell yeah Mozilla! Release new versions LIKE A BOSS!

Non that crazy, 6 was what it was on before 7.

Mine updated to 7 this morning.

I'm on 5 with no new updates available, and I'm only hearing stuff about 7, so yeah, where's 6?

That simply had to be put in my sig.

Do you not get updates every time you start up?

I think I was on 6.04b when it updated to 7.

I think he's just on the normal release channel.

They should make "Firefox 11" !!! See what i did there? Then in 7 months call it "Firefox 12"... I'm a genius!

Ahhhh makes sense.

@Thracken you have to download firefox aurora dude, it's the beta stuff.

I don't use beta stuff on the company box :D
No seriously, as a "normal" user, this is a strange situation! I understand it since I'm not entirely dim-witted, but when you have version 5 like me, and see news about 7, you would wonder where 6 is, wouldn't you?

Google Chrome FTW!!!
