msi 890fx gd70 and pci express lanes

I have 2 5870's in crossfire, slots 1 and 5, and in slot 6 i have an 8800gt for physx.. when it's installed it drops one of my cards down to x8.. the card in slot 5 i'm assuming.. with no physx card(8800gt) i get full x16.. on both rails.. anyways to overcome this?? has anybody worked with this before.. the 8800 is just doing physx.. no sense in it setting up the slots like that it seems?

That would be normal operation. I think the easiest way to overcome it would be to tape off the 8800GT down to how many lanes you wish to use..

bummer.. it doesn't seem to affect gameplay all that much.. should i worry or am i better without the card at all.. i just wanted a physx card.. but if it kills performance in any noticeable way i figure i'm better off without it...

yeah when you populate more than 2 slots with gfx it reverts to x8x8x8 for the three slots. I think you may be able to work it out where its 16x16x4 perhaps. I am not sure how many PCIe 2.0 lanes the board has though.

saweet.. fixed. i found that slots 1 and 5 offer x16 links in crossfire, and slot 4 is only a 4x slot. So i put the 8800gt in there and wala!!! i now have crossfire 5870's @ x16 2.0 links and my physx card on x4..

btw is x4 ok for just an 8800gt on physx.. and what would be a recomended way to oc the 8800gt shaders.. i use msi afterburner for my 5870s.. whats another lightweight program i could use just for the 8800...
