My first 2TB SSD great deal

Wont name the retailer so I dont look like an advert, but snagged their last one, 2TB for £110 is good anyway, but this is datacentre SSD usually 4 figures, Intel DC P4600 2TB brand new.

It is a PCIe SSD so luckily I have an older board that hasnt had all its slots replaced by M.2.

Ok I will share, but I got the last one, so no point me posting on the hot deals, I wasnt sure if allowed.

It was from Novatech.

Seems its a real power guzzler apparently 20W when writing. way more than consumer SSD's or even consumer spindles.

I have a decision to make.

This PC has one spare 4 lane PCIe slot. 970 EVO is in one via a M.2 card, GPU in another, the spare one would take lanes from GPU.

Second PC which is my hypervisor/NAS machine, has a spare 4 lane PCIe slot. Also a spare M.2 slot. Using that M.2 slot would disable the spare PCIe slot, so they both have same penalty.

My two realistic choices are.

Put the new SSD in here as a upgrade from the 970 EVO and move the 970 EVO to the second machine, I would have a choice of using m.2 or the existing PCIe card, will use the latter for ease of use and its built in heatsink if I go this way, or put it in the 2nd machine and give it some purpose in there, I am favouring replacing the 970 EVO in this machine as this machine has more demand for NAND storage.

Not sure if having 2 TB SSD/NVME is a good idea,

as storing huge amount of data on SSD/NVME may be risky, because they can develop silent data corruption (no alarm signs, until you try to create backup image, or run SMART self tests, see the thread of Samsung 870 EVO series).

I suggest no to store important data on SSD/NVME, just put the OS, games files, things where speed launch matters the most.

I have 500 GB and 1 TB SSDs, they are used for OS, games, and some files that I can re-download in case of SSD crash.
For important data I still use hard disks.

Perhaps I will change my mind if important progress are made for flash memory technology.

I believe the 870 EVO problems are specific to that model. I've had a 2TB Crucial MX500 for 3 years and it's 100% rock solid reliable, zero problems, zero SMART errors. (And of course, everyone should always backup their data anyway as a separate issue).

I didn't know SSDs fared better than HDDs actually. I will definitely keep that in mind. I wonder if QLC is much worse than (3D) TLC though.

I posted on the TPU CDM thread, but also here is compared to 970 EVO.

This drive forces the write cache off in windows. For my use case this is an upgrade due to the extra 1.1TB capacity over the 970. But would love to find a way to keep both in here, if not the 970 will still go in the other machine.
