My research into AMD's Linux "Performance Marginality" issue:

@ OP: did your problem manifest itself like this (around the middle, to the left)?

Segmentation Fault.png

I haven't removed the cooler to look @ the CPU's date, yet. I'm kind of afraid, lol.

Nice one, RTB. :)

Unfortunately, that's almost exactly what I got under load. Segfaults.

In your opinion, should i try and RMA my CPU? Assuming ofc that the date on it is before the 25th week (that's the one, right?).

So far, that pic is the only instance i've noticed this. That doesn't mean it hasn't happened other times: that was the only one i've noticed.

It's up to you, but given the CPU they shipped me OC's like nuts, it may well be worth it for that alone.

The issue does not appear destructive in anyway, just annoying.

@R-T-B did you consider at any point if this behaviour may have been related to a Spectre fix already? Either way, interesting read!

A linux toolkit I was involved with helping make (really just a bash shell script that poked at things to try and produce this bug) discovered that doing a lot of SYSCALLS to high registers produces a reboot. At the time, it was considered a pointless novelty, but it may have been a sign of spectre actually as spectre talks a lot about speculative execution screwing up on high registers.

If only I had realized what i was onto, maybe I could've got some project zero money... lol

But no, we dismissed it and moved on and never really finished anything, mostly because we all got RMAs and were happy. Good old laziness, she be a b*tch. ;)
