Need help with my brother's CPU

No I mean..It's open...but I have no idea what to run or what to do. It was talkin bout Gimps n workers n I had NO idea :/

1 Ok run prime 95, and 1st choose "just stress testing" not the gimps network thing,
2 choose the second one down "In-place large FFT's (max heat, power.....)"
3 then click ok :)
now its running, all you need to do is take a screenshot like you did before with CPUID HW monitor running as well that will tell us the max temps your cpu is hitting

No I mean..It's open...but I have no idea what to run or what to do. It was talkin bout Gimps n workers n I had NO idea :/

Start at..

Select
RUN32M Have HW Monitor open while you run it Observe the CPU TEMPS
If they don't go above 58c run it again

To see the time
Select
View Score

If possible take a screen shot
-with CPUZ running
-with HW Monitor running
-with Wprime running 1024M

EDIT: sorry these direction were for Wprime Follow Troyrae360's directions.... My bad

Well, I have a SS of CPUHW after 5 minutes or so of being on. So far its lookin like overheat could be it. 10 degrees F in 5 minutes or so... :/
24 C to 38 C in bout 10 minutes
Btw, apparently the CPU will howl after 'a few hours' accordin to my bro. I only hear it every once in a while. I actually just thought it was the fan being old :/....

Here's one. I hope I did it right....sorry for double post. Figured Id put this new SS in a different post.
EDIT: This 2nd post is after bout 20 minutes or so of being on I think....
EDIT EDIT: Keep in mind, 2 people are up here and its 65 degrees in this room...

Can you post a pic of the PC with the sidepanel open? Maybe there is something severely restricting airflow or whatever...

Possibly later. Right now, Im going to go play some L4D2 to try and distract myself from the painful coughing and slight dizzyness that has kept me home 2 days in a row, and might keep me from attending an important college prep program trip -.-
EDIT: Well, I think sensors might be screwy. It says it's at 70 C right now...I've NEVER seen it that high, and it's not howling. Nor is the case really hot to the touch. Its also still 'cold' in the room....And the 920, according to what was posted last page, is supposed to fry past 63 C....
EDIT EDIT: Yeah...it dropped back down to 65 in less then 5 minutes...I think the sensors are screwy....

Looks to me like 1 minute after starting that test you were at 54c...and your system is idles at 30c... whether that's the cause of the slow down or not It's still bad That's 9c away from Critical after 1 minute of testing.....Not good at all

Edit: feel the air blowing out of the back of the case..Check to see if it is warm
EDIT:EDIT: My cpu goes from 21c-30c in less than 2 minutes and up to 40c within 5 minutes and back down to 36c after 7 minutes with Prime95 those readings may be correct

Here is a screen shot

Yeah it hovers round 58-59 C now.
Yes it is warm. And fast. At the top. I hope thats the CPU n not the PSU or something lol

Seeing as it's an older system, there's a chance that the thermal paste has broken down. Alot of thermal pastes usually break down and have to be re-applied every 3 years or so. The newer stuff like MX-2, MX-3, Arctic Silver - Ceramique, IC7, OCZ Freeze only need to be re-applied once every 8 years or so. If your up for it at some point you should take the heatsink and fan off the processor and have a quick look. If the thermal paste has broken down, it can cause you pretty nasty heat issues.

I dunno how to check, and neither does he. If its heatsink or thermal paste related, which it seems to be, we cant do anything until his friend comes down, and he'd be replacing the thermal paste.
EDIT: Correction, i dunno how to check without breaking something.

Good news Bad News

It is easy to do But your gonna want have TIM there before you check
Sadly the cost of TIM has gone up and usually cost as much to have it shiiped as the Tim itself costs...

good news you could Replace the HSF and the TIM at the same time for the same price as the TIM alone....

Here is a Decent example of a HSF that works for your Bro's system it comes with TIM

Warm to hot air coming out means something is overheating. Most likely the CPU.
Last time I had hot air coming out it was due to a CPU fan full, and I mean full of dust.
So it might be, imho:
- Thermal paste gettin crappy (which I personally doubt, never had paste failing on me)
- Something's really dusty

I'd check if the power supply's fan is running too. And all other fans while you're at it.

I'll have him check the fans later to see if they're dusty. otherwise it might be paste....
EDIT: Used 3M Dust Remover. Quite a bit of dust. It was at 45 when I was essentially idle & afk downstairs. That was also a few minutes at most after starting it back up. Shifting between 62 n 63 with prime 95 n HW monitor on. Says 66. Gonna turn it off now.
EDIT EDIT: If I can find it, and he's willing...I may give him one of the spare 85mm or w/e fans I have that I cant really use...
EDIT EDIT EDIT: And if he can use it. Update. after 5 minutes or so of turning off Prime 95, it has dropped to 55 C/130 F
EDIT: 2 minutes or so now, and it seems to be going from 52-54 C...
EDIT: 2 minutes, now its at 49. It seems clearing the dust severely helped :3. Didnt even think of that, and I wouldve thought he'd have done that consistently....he defrags so much I wouldve thought hed dust as well -.-....47 now. Is that decent enough, or is thermal paste or something still probably hampering it?

I'd say try out some gameplay. If it goes on stuttering again, you know it wasn't enough ;)

Also check for dust in the CPU coolers heatsink if you havent already.

I think he's done checking for dust for now....And yeah. There are DEFINITELY noticeable improvements, but there were still points when it would freeze n people would skip, but i think thats due to a mix of internet AND graphical lag. I think thermal paste or heatsinks might be the issue....so glad i wont have any sort of lag issues once i get my pc up n running x.x
EDIT: BTW, I didnt mention, but my last check had it at 45 C. Also, it says it was 66 C when it came out of L4D2....

Does it drop quickly or does it take more than 1 or 2 minutes to go from 66 to say, 55?
Also, is the air coming out the back still warm?

Yeah. Id hazard it takes round 5-10 minutes to get to 58 or so. Didnt watch exactly. Just got out of ME2 bout 2 minutes ago or so and its at 67. Although I AM installing ME1 now...and yes its still warm. Not AS warm, and not as much...I think..

Theres a good chance that replacing thermal paste and having a good look at the airflow will be enough to fix this entirely.

Btw, if you wanna know if it's internet lag or stuttering... play single player? :D

We have a can of air, so I might try that.
I'll have him check the temperatures later.
He refuses to use free stuff, as to quote, "Unlike free stuff, Norton hasn't tried to eat my hard drive." He hasn't used Avast specifically, but out of all the bad experiences, he refuses.

Theres your problem. Hes using the wrong programs. Norton is horrible

Shut down all unnecessary programs via the task manager. You should have no more then 25 items running. If that doesn’t fix it then update ALL drivers. If that deosnt help. Down grade the video drivers..go back about three or four versions..Finally If that doesn't work ......format reinstall.

That what I would do.

Jetster, appreciate the help, but if you read the page 4/5 posts my brother told me that the pc runs slow even right after a reformat. IE drivers but no norton. Which means, hopefully, that it's probably just a mix of dust/bad air flow and possibly degrading thermal paste.

Also, he won't remove norton, and it wouldnt cause things this severe.

Heh, Leo rocks. Well, *shrug* For now I shall remain with it. He paid for a year....maybe I'll try some of the free stuff in the summer once I finally enjoy some major pc time without constantly shifting software n such, and when I have back ups...Yeah, well...his CPU is overheating to the point of overheating now, so at this point we're just keeping it off and if his Mobo can run it, he'll use my E6300 in the mean time once I have my PC parts...

If you look around you may be able to find a Replacement cpu fan with TIM for less than $10 for that at some place like GearXs.com
here is one from Geeks.com for $10 shipped and has TIM pre applied
http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=E21984-001-DB&cat=FAN

and if your Brother has the screw in type here is one for $7
http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=CK-77502&cat=FAN

Clips or pins either way it's a 5 minute job for the first time DIY home tech
you can literally find 1000's of video's on youtube showing you step by step how to do this

and for $10 or less it's worth the chance of fixing your problem rather than not using the PC...right

Trust me this is simple to do
you just unplug old fan
remove old cooler (wiggle it left to right to remove it after un screwing it or releasing the pins)
clean off cpu
put on new cooler
plug in
done
