NVIDIA today launched its Next Generation Tegra, the world's first processor for the mobile web, specifically designed for the high-resolution needs of tablets. Consumers have been waiting for a truly portable, high-resolution, no-compromise Internet experience. NVIDIA's new Tegra processor delivers that by combining lightning-quick browsing, streaming 1080p video and Adobe Flash Player 10.1 acceleration with an immersive 3D user interface and days of battery life.

"Without question, 2010 is going to be year of the tablet," said Tim Bajarin, President, Creative Strategies, Inc. "The new NVIDIA Tegra processor has a unique feature set critical for tablets -- fast web browsing with fully rendered pages, uncompromised graphics, snappy user interface and HD video - all with the battery life we've only seen with cell phones."

Key to Tegra's capabilities are eight independent processors, including the world's first dual core CPU for mobile applications. These processors are used together or independently to optimize power usage at all times. With its ultra low-power design, Tegra delivers over 16 hours of HD video or 140 hours of music-on a single charge.

Highlights / Key Facts:
  • Tegra is the power behind the new generation of tablets, offering:
    o 3D touchscreen user interfaces
    o Amazing battery life- always-on and always-connected
o Adobe Flash Player 10.1 acceleration for streaming video and 3D mobile games
o Resolution ranging from four-to-eight times that of smartphones
o Form factors and screen sizes ranging from 5-15 inches
o Immersive gaming, vivid photos and video, and crystal-clear audio
  • Next Generation Tegra is a leap in mobile computing performance with:
o The world's first dual-core ARM Cortex A9 CPU running up to 1GHz
o Eight independent processors to handle web browsing, HD video encode and decode and mobile 3D gaming
o 10x faster than the processors used in smartphones today, and up to 4x the performance of the previous generation Tegra processor
o Advanced TSMC 40nm process with active power management
  • Next Generation Tegra is now in production. Developers can order the Tegra Developer Kit to create applications for Tegra-powered devices such as tablets, smartbooks and smartphones at developer.nvidia.com/tegra.
  • At CES 2010, NVIDIA is hosting many revolutionary new tablets that leverage the power of the next generation Tegra. Visit NVIDIA's booth in South Hall 4 #35912 to see the latest designs.

I have no use for tablet,, but I'm sure others will

Tablet revolution my ass. Just the next 'cool thing' for manufacturers to hype, and maybe a lot of mouthbreather idiotsumers who just get the new shininess will go for it. Otherwise their awkward in between status, too big to be as handy as a smartphone and too limited to be as useful as an ultraportable, marks them for failure in my mind. This goes mainly for the 7-10" ones, I could see some niche traction for ones that are a bit smaller.

But, but... Apple is going to have the iTablet...
So everyone needs to make tablets now, as we're all going to need one... yeah right...

ARM? I was getting excited that NVIDIA engineered their own x86 processor. I guess that's not the case.

Tablets aside, Tegra is very powerful though. I hope they are used to power smart phones instead.

We all know it can do it... ZuneHD for example..

Wow -- thank you for expressing that sentiment intelligently. Glad to see someone doing it for once. :D

*sigh*....that is all

If they made it water proof it would be perfect for computing in the shower. You could check and view the news/stocks/bank account and business itinerary for the day while in the shower. I already have caffeine soap to rule out the need for coffee. :D

It does have an application even if its not water proof. Think of it as a smart flat panel display. Its like a nettop with a touch interface. If ATi made it I think we would see a few people interested on this thread.

Nvidia has made great progress in low power R&D whether some people want to admit it or not. I hope they will consider desktop gaming as their priority one again soon.

sigh...:shadedshu I remember early 2009 when nvidia was showing Tegra on a netbook, and after a year later the only thing we have is Zune HD. Although it is nice but personally I expected more. You don't know when this gets into a real product.

Pfft, people have been trying to get tablets going to years now.

They'll always be for a very specific type of person I think.

I can see good tablets with a large screen replacing netbooks in the home (think livingroom or patio). For casual use to show family photos to a few people all gathered in a room sitting on the couch, a 15" tablet is easier to pass around or hold up and show off at the next family get-together than a heavy/bulky/awkward laptop or netbook.

Know what's even easier? A TV with a USB port, or networking, video input from an HTPC, from a settop box, from a laptop or netbook... if tablets will run in the $400 range you could buy a small TV for the price not to mention that most people have a TV anyway. Tablets are a solution looking for a problem and they are not new whatsoever.

I do agree with others that the tech is neat and should be encouraged, just not in tweener-sized tablets that cost as much as a 'good' netbook or a CULV laptop.

I'm starting to see Tegra try to oppose with the HD 5000 series' power consumption. I'm sure of that and everyone knows in this forum that Nvidia is definitely gonna create yet another worthless app titled Touch-Yourself-at-Night or something.

But I think if there was an opposing power saving technology (if opposed to ATI's) that is gonna be added to GT 300 series, I think it would be cool to add a low end series card to my list when planning out a media server.

IF there's going to be a tablet made by nvidia, artist would buy em if it is Wacom penable.

Most car dealerships use tablet PCs for work orders too. :)

I can see that, but that's use in buisness. I think this "thing" going to be consumer based?

Consumer products are used in the general business sector all the time. The only thing that is very different than consumer market in computing is the science, enthusiast, and medical markets.

HD playback in a tablet is pretty cool. I'm not into tablets (although a multitouch high-res tablet would be sweet), but when this kinda power hit smart phones I'll wet my pants. I'm thinking a high res smart phone + a high def projector (like the ones they put in cameras). :D

Apple hints around at the iSlate, HP shows off their little tablet for 30 min, it's a revolution.
