Ubisoft confirmed a couple of days ago that the game R.U.S.E would be using Steamworks for it's DRM and not their infamous always-on internet connection method, and that the SP game will be available for play offline.

They stated that they may go back to it in future games, but the fact they are not using it looks like either they were pressured by someone not to use it, or perhaps their sales numbers were not as great as they hopedd for the games that used it.

While not a perfect answer, this is better than the crap DRM they have been using.

Thoughts?

Fantastic news: nice to see that not everyone at Ubisoft is an idiot.

Steamworks... Steam DRM? Does that mean it's only available on Steam, or if you buy it retail, you have to create a Steam account to use it?

I think it means precisely that; however, as far as I am concerned, Steam is a lesser evil in terms of DRM and it is something that I can tolerate whilst Ubisoft's "always on" crap is something that I am not willing to put up with. It would appear that Ubisoft have realised that I am not alone in this regard.

Steamworks is basically the publishing/business backend to Steam:

That means it will definitely be on Steam. It doesn't necessarily mean Ubisoft still won't be publishing it to disk; however, they could be doing like THQ did with Saints Row II: The disk is a geniuine disk but the install files contained are actually Steam files meaning it is released on disk but requires Steam to run.

Steam is just slightly better than Ubisoft's custom DRM (still requires internet, but not 99% of the time you are playing). Neither stop piracy so meh to both.

It was inevitable that Ubisoft would have to abandon their DRM just as they had to abandon Star Force 3 (due to incompatible DVD drives) and Tages (due to lack of 64-bit support and numerous problems associated with that). People get really, really annoyed when all said products only succeed at stopping legitimate game owners from playing the game. For example, only the pirates could play Settlers 7 because Ubisoft's servers were down more than they were up.

If Assassin's Creed series will ever use Steam protection only, i might buy it. But until then, i'll just wait.

this is great, looks like they finally realised it was a stupid idea

agreed.

steam is the compromise DRM - yes it must always be running, but you dont have to be online to play, and it has value adding features (ability to directly purchase games, steam overlay for chat, etc) - while DRM like the ubi one adds *no* useful features to the consumer.

its the difference between a carrot and a stick - even if you see it as a honey coated stick, its still better.

uPlay?

Finally. If Ubi continues this, they might get back some of their loyal customers :D

sweet ill probably get this now since they removed that shitty DRM so HIP HIP HURRAY HIP HIP HURRAY HIP HIP HURRAAYYYYY!!!!!!!!!

Awesome. Glad to hear that they are going to steam instead of what they had before. :)

Yay I can get it now :D

As I stated previously, this is at least the third time Ubisoft used an extra-strict DRM and ended up abandoning it due to public outcry. Seeing as they haven't been condemed to bankruptcy for treating customers as criminals, history is doomed to repeat. There will be a fourth and a fifth.

yup ill by the boxed version tho instead of steam cause i like boxes there cool lol

This is good news, but the games still a shallow crap RTS

Yes this is big news i am alloverit around and on ruse forums , and completely forgot for tpu sorry

It's interesting to point out that if you download a pirated game, the DRM is usually bypassed completely. All they are accomplishing with adding the crap is giving the release groups something to show off.

wow, finally, i fully support this move, go ubisoft go, and please remove that pesky DRM in splintercell, PoP, and assassin creed II too, i want to play that game badly,

As far as I know, Ubisoft has never removed DRM on a previous title. Basically, you're stuck with it until Ubisoft closes down those save servers, then you're screwed.
