No Display With DVI to VGA Adapter

You can get a DVI-D to HDMI adapter!

...they cost about the same as a DVI-D to HDMI cable though so either way. The end result is the same.

HDMI was built off of the DVI-D standard.
I bought a NVidia GeForce 9800gt it has a dvi-I like this and if I buy a dvi-D dual link (m) to vga (f) will it come up on my monitor that is only has a vga port?

You need DVI-I analog signal, I don't think it's gonna work.

but dvi-d doesn't have the extra 4 pins on the left
Yes you are correct, sorry, I went of the picture on the previous page and the fact you called it a DVI-D, when it is a DVI-I.
If your GPU has those 4 extra pins it will allow analogue.

DVI-A (pictured here) or DVI-I male to VGA female is what you want:

The DVI side can have more pins but it cannot have fewer.

this is sad. if only i had tried to connect my second monitor sooner. but kinda upset at the person i cant curse at . i have spent over 30 dollars and waited 3 months only to find out that i cant use my adapter well because of the 4 pins that dont exist on my dvi d port... grrrrr. thanks for letting us know about that. i just wish i had figured that out before i got started.
