Well, you don't need anything nuclear to have an explosion.

There are many things that can go boom, unfortunately.

Biggest risk might be pirates trying to steal/hijack a ship. The nuclear reactor typically used to generate heat then drive a steam turbine then generator then motor.

Having a generator that doesn't need any fuel for xxx amount of years could be an attractive target.

The huge amounts of money saved on fuel and travel time since nuclear ships can move much faster due to not needing to travel slowly for economy use of fuel would more than cover security. Besides, the types of reactors we're talking about aren't dangerous or possible to use to create weapons grade plutonium.

I agree, going fast can solve one problem...but it also makes propellers ridiculously ineffective...so yes, going fast is a way to go - but you need to also address the ecological impact of going fast: noise to animals, etc.

Then again, you do have to slow down when going through straits...or you need to go around, completely. Which will not reduce the time itself.

&, besides the example from @Count von Schwalbe , there is also possibility to board the ship to get material for "dirty bomb". :cool:

Nuclear is only safe, if it is heavily guarded. That is why "nuclear battery" does not work on Earth. It is a great piece of equipment for Space, but not here with all the pirates & middle-east crisis. :cool:

Nuclear batteries don't work on earth because the use cases basically don't exist. The output is too low for the cost. They only make sense when you need a trickle of power for a really long time on something you can't maintain.
