I think they may be right around the $600 mark or so at launch. I would expect this to be a $499 retail card, however. It is just two 8800 GTS cards in SLI on one slot. The real question is if the 256 bit memory bus is simply carried over. And, the frame buffer will only be 512 MB. Looks like a product to simply skip over. I will wait for the next gen GTX cards.

not to mention a game to utilize them

every game can use the power, if you turn the settings up.
Hell, my system lags occasionally on the newer titles and it would only be worse if i had a larger screen.

Looks like it might be a while before we see Nvidia's real next gen technology.I would hazzard a guess that maybe they are just treading water until AMD/ATI releases R700.The problem with that is that probably won't make an appearance until mid 2008.In any case having to deal with all this shrunken rehashed "new" old tech is a bit frustrating.Income tax time is just about here, and i'm itching for some new toys!Depending on the specific specs and price point, this just might be one of the things that will help keep me busy until my next completely new build and that we be built around an Intel Nehalem multicore. But as for now my hardware jones needs to be fed,and if the specs are right this might just have to do for now.Oh well EVGA's step-up program has saved me more than once.LOL This hobby has proven to be a real crap shoot a long time ago. You've got to pay to play. There's always a risk the question is am i willing to take it...............we'll see.

I'm with you Heavy....So far I see no real reason to replace my current 8800's..:toast:...When the 8800's first made their appearance, the performance jump from 7900GT's to 8800GTS's was simply astounding:eek:, with these up and comers(9800) a 30% increase really doesn't pump my nads.:shadedshu..The minimal performance gains do not justify the painful punch in the wallet.(1000+ if you SLI):wtf: Just to add, and I hate to say it because I've always went nVidia (and probably still will) but the best bang for the buck right now appears to be the higher end ATI cards. :-(

i can bet the 3870x2 will be less in price and similar or better in performance than this 9800gx2 ............. and also the 3870x2 will be released earlier than this card =)

Decided not to get this but go with Bonetrail:roll: gonna look at some x38 and P35 mobos and make a thread tommarow. But gonna upgrade to a quad and 8800GTS on my current mobo first. Then later get new motherboard.

I'm with you on that one, and if my memory serves me right, I think that the 3870x2 will have both cores implemented on one PCB.

also one thing that was never answered, will it be possible to run eight cores on spider if driver and game support were created?

EDIT: I mean with PCI-E 2.0 effectively doubling the bandwidth eight gpus is a great way to put the new standard to test.

If thats right, i'd prefer that.

Great for those on watercooling, and you can still get custom air coolers made for it too.

(Mmmm quad crossfire with dual GPU cards, and a yorkfield....)

lol none of the intel/nvidia boards currently have 4 pic-e slots, so if you want to go crossfire x youd have to get an amd board with the 790FX chipset. I dont even think that you could have tri crossfire on a non 790FX board

nope it will be only crossfire capable i.e quad core config , not crossfire x octa config.

this is just a slap and patch job by nvidia on this card , they r just putting this out for the sake of having one called a gx2 ............. if they had their heart in it it wud have been on one pcb and much more things attractive about it.

well if thats the case, one 3870x2 should be cheaper than two reg. 3870. otherwise whats the point?

EDIT: AHHH I think I've come up with the answer as to why someone would want two 3870x2 over 4 regular 3870's. 3870's have dual slot cooling solutions which wouldn't fit on a common 790FX board, but with two 3870x2's you can have crossfire x no problem

yeah off of the last gx2 nightmare i see little reason to expect any success out of this card. (or the dual 3870 ) they simply need to work on better tech not just throw current gen cards together on one pcb and expect miracle performance.

the dual 3870 is nothing like the old gx2. 1 pcb instead of 2 pcb.

7950 GX2 = 7900 GT 512MB SLi
9800 GX2 = 8800 GT 512MB SLi

Would have made much more sense to number the G92-based cards under the "8900" series.
The 9800 doesn't make much sense either, but I guess maybe they want to compete with ATI's crazy new naming scheme.

No more like 9800 GX2 = 8800 Ultra 768MB in SLi, because to 8800GTs doesnt give more than 20% increase in performance when in SLi Beaches but to 8800Ultras do like i said before all they have changed is the 80nm to 65nm for better cooling, its just like a old 8800GTS 80nm to the new 8800GTS 65nm a bit faster less memory

yeah the 3870x2 will be THE dual gpu card to own. I might even get one, since my mobo only has one PCI-E slot

assuming it works in every board. I know Nvidias GX2 quite often didnt work in SLI in a lot of systems, unless it was an Nvidia chipset to begin with.

(I hope both these new dual cards do, btw)

yeah the 3870x2 will be THE dual gpu card to own. I might even get one, since my mobo only has one PCI-E slot

considering ATI's track record with multi GPU setups, 2 GPUs on one PCB should be gold for them - although, I'm defi looking forward to the rumored R700 - dual core GPUs . . . and I can see ATI taking it a step further with two R700s on one PCB, which would equate to 4 cores on one card . . . xFire 2 cards like that, and that's 8 GPUs - 3 cards would equal 12. Even if a xfire would be 5-10% more efficient and powerful than any similar nVidia hardware, a 3 or 4 card setup would bury them performance wise - unless nVidia straightens out their SLI implimentation a bit more.

. . . and that is what I think nVidia is being cautious about . . . they're not sure if ATI does intend to follow that route, but it would certainly be ATI's most promising venture at this point.
